The University of Missouri-Columbia requests to name the Division of Nephrology after Karl D. Nolph, MD. Nephrology is housed within the Department of Medicine at the MU School of Medicine.

Dr. Nolph was raised in Brookville, PA and completed his BS in Chemistry from Franklin and Marshall College. He earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1963. He interned at Bryn Mawr Hospital in Pennsylvania from 1963 to 1964, and he continued his residency in internal medicine until 1966. From 1965 to 1966, he served as chief medical resident at Bryn Mawr Hospital. He completed a post-doctoral fellowship in renal-electrolyte disorders at the University of Pennsylvania in 1967.

Dr. Karl Nolph was a pioneer in the field of dialysis and a longtime leader of the University of Missouri School of Medicine’s Division of Nephrology, where he served as Division Chief for 25 years. He held the Loren E. Broaddus Distinguished Professorship and the University of Missouri Board of Curators’ Professorship. In the world of kidney failure treatments, the name Karl Nolph is synonymous with peritoneal dialysis, a form of home dialysis. He pioneered the study of this therapy, and his work has improved the lives of patients with kidney failure internationally.

Because of Dr. Nolph’s tireless work in the field of nephrology, his world-renowned research on kidney disease and transformational development of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD), has helped countless patients lead healthier, self-sufficient lives. Dr. Nolph has been honored locally, nationally and internationally for his important work, including lifetime achievement and research awards. Following his retirement from MU, he remained active, continuing his work with the Annual Dialysis Conference. He passed away in 2014.

Collected Rule and Regulation 110.081 requires Board of Curators approval when naming academic units, stating “Academic units such as colleges and schools may be named after individuals who have achieved distinction in one or more fields of endeavor within the academic unit or who have made a significant financial contribution to the University.”

The University of Missouri-Columbia requests approval to name the Division of Nephrology after Dr. Karl D. Nolph. The request has the approval of the Dean of the School of Medicine, the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement, the Provost, the MU Chancellor and the UM President.
