ANNUAL REPORT2016 - 2017 GYM YEAR

The Northeastern District only conducts one gymnastic Competition during the season, and for seasons that do not have a National Slet pending, we do a Slet weekend which includes a competition as well as an exhibition. This information is included in the following unit reports. The District also meets 3-4 times per year, once in person, and the others by tele-conference.

1.Classes

Greater Cleveland:

  • Registration packets were mailed out to all the past class families as well as any new contacts we received throughout the summer. We then conducted in person class registrations in mid- September.
  • Class enrollments at the end of the year were as follows:

Tots - 30 enrolled, Girls - 61 enrolled Boys 26 enrolled,

JG 26 enrolled JB – 6 enrolled Women – 42 enrolled

Men – 24 Day – 22

Girls Gymnastic Team – 30 Boys Gymnastic Team - 4

  • The season always kicks off with a thorough cleaning of the gym and checking of the equipment.
  • Classes started the first week of October. We are constantly looking and recruiting helpers for the classes, which includes having our juniors help in the childrens and Tots Classes.
  • Class instructors have been trying to keep fitness activities in the classes, and for the juniors and adults, volleyball is getting more emphasis. More playing time is happening after Men’s class this past year.

Ceska Sin:

  • First session classes started the first week of October. Second session started mid-February.
  • Average class enrollment: Tots – 10; Girls – 25; Jr Girls – 10; Women – 8; Men – 5;.

Detroit:

  • Gymnastic classes started for the year September 16th. Adult classes started October 3rd.
  • Adult Classes meet weekly teaching aerobics, yoga or dance followed by calisthenics. Evening completed with social time in the club room
  • Average yearly class enrollment: Tots – 18, Girls – 85, Jr Girls – 7, Women – 10, Boys – 23, Jr boys – 0, Men – 4.
  • Classes are on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Saturday.
  • Registration is completed before class or online.
  • We started Dance classes twice a week and there was a lot of interest.
  • Flex schedule for summer semester classes consisted of 6 weeks (families could choose any 6 of 10 weeks available which allows for family vacations etc…)
  • In late fall a number of our adult members travel south to Florida where they continue to hold adult classes with a few Greater Cleveland snow birds.

2.Competitions:

Greater Cleveland:

  • Many of our girls and some junior girls competed in the Sokol Greater Cleveland Super Sunday Invitational.
  • An In house practice competition was held for our classes on Saturday, April 8. This was to help prepare them for the District competition.
  • 59 boys, girls, juniors, women and even men, participated in the NE District Competition, hosted by Sokol Greater Cleveland on May 20.
  • We also have girls and a boys competitive teamthat participate in the NE Ohio Gymnastic Leagues
  • Greater Cleveland was chosen to host the NE Oho Girls Gymnastic League Championship, which brought over 500 girls to our facility over three days.
  • All of our classes except for Tots, participated in the American Sokol Organization, National Fitness Challenge Competition.

Ceska Sin:

  • We hosted the NED competition at SGC in May.
  • We had 18 kids participate in the NED competition.
  • We had 28 participants in the Fitness Challenge.
  • We had 1 woman compete at the National Slet in Cedar Rapids. She finished in 1st.
  • We had 3 men play as visiting members for volleyball teams in Cedar Rapids.

Detroit:

  • Detroit Sokol had 11 participants competing in the District competition.
  • The Detroit girls competitive team competed in 4 AAU meets in our local area.
  • In January Detroit Sokol held an inter squad meet for the team girls and used judges from Eastern Michigan University Women’s gymnastics team.

3. Exhibitions:

Greater Cleveland:

  • SGC had two exhibitions; One on February 18 at a local High School, and another on June 4that Oddfellows Fresh Air Camp.
  • The Aerial silks class members conducted another wonderful Showcase in the gym with special lighting, and sound, on May 6th, with 28 performers and over 200 spectators.
  • Our excursion to the Slet in Cedar Rapids was very successful for us. We had a total of 103 Greater Cleveland members who attended the Slet. 79 of those participated in the Slet exhibition and competitions. Many traveled there by car except for the 48 passengers on our bus. We returned home with 36 gymnastic & fitness challenge medals and 6 team trophies. The 1st place Relay Race team, representing the NED, were all SGC members. In addition the NED came in second in the tug of war bringing another trophy to us.

Ceska Sin:

  • Our Winter Exhibition was held the last Saturday of January in our hall. We had 56 participants and 170 spectators. This was one of our largest in many years.
  • We were invited to DTJ for our Summer Exhibition in early June. We had 22 participants (it rained).
  • Also, had 5 participants in the ASO National Slet, in Cedar Rapids.

Detroit:

  • The ASO national Slet was held June 22nd-25th in Cedar Rapids Iowa. Everyone had an amazing time visiting the Czech village, the Czech museum & other items of interest in downtown Cedar Rapids. Detroit had 15 members attend participating in fitness challenge, volleyball, banquet, gymnastics competition & the Sunday Slet.
  • Detroit Sokol held a year end recital that took place May 18th with a great showing from all families involved in the program.

4. Courses/Clinics

Greater Cleveland:

  • Five students attended the ASO National Instructors school held at Sokol Cedar Rapids immediately following the Slet. We also had one two members attend as Instructors.
  • Our class instructors continue to hold mini clinics at the beginning of the season for all the class helpers.
  • Greater Cleveland was host to the American Sokol Developmental Workshop in October 2016. This was a hands on workshop covering many subjects important to Sokol.
  • 8 young ladies from a Montessori school wanted to have gymnastics lessons and were paying a fee from money they raised themselves to have this project happen. Karen Hartman was in charge.
  • Karen Hartman set up several summer open gym classes.

Ceska Sin:

  • We had 13 juniors/girls and 2 instructors attend a skills clinic at Central District in January.
  • We held a spotting clinic for our newer instructors led by Sonja in September.

Detroit:

  • Lynn attended the annual District Directors meeting in October. The same weekend was the developmental conference and we had 4 BOI members attend.
  • Coaching clinics continue to be held throughout the year concentrating on the needs of the coaches.
  • 5 coaches attended the region 5 congress

5.Sports/Athletics Programs

Greater Cleveland:

  • Volleyball continued on some Tuesday evenings after the girls class and again on Friday’s after Men’s Class. More volleyball took place on Fridays, in the summer.

Detroit:

  • New age parties continue & consist of one hour of gymnastic instruction followed by an hour in a party room
  • Holiday camps continue to be very successful. They consisted of full or half days with most kids commit for the entire week. This past year we held 5 week long camps over Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, spring break & August ( end of summer)
  • Detroit competed the fitness challenge.
  • Offering a new dance program two days a week.
  • We had 4 Special event open gyms usually around the holidays.

6.Guest Appearances

Greater Cleveland:

  • Our Silks class members arefrequently invited to give demonstrations and exhibitions of aerial silks and other circus arts. They also performed at other venues in the Greater Cleveland area.

7.Social

Greater Cleveland:

  • Our annual Swim Party was held on March 26th, at a local recreation center. 120 swimmers participated.

Ceska Sin:

  • We held our normal celebration in our hall after our winter exhibition w/ music, food, drink and raffles.
  • We held our annual men and women’s Christmas party in December with volleyball, food and gag gifts.
  • We had (4) girls participate in a junior overnight at SGC in the spring.

Detroit:

  • Holiday party in December took place for the girls team. They did a gift exchange along with a pot luck dinner. We also provided a holiday luncheon for the coaches to thank them for all their hard work.
  • Adult class had their annual Christmas party with a pot luck as well.

8.Other

Greater Cleveland:

  • We continue to purchase safety and training equipment each year.
  • Greater Cleveland continues to be a Club member of the USA Gymnastics organization and AAU

Ceska Sin:

  • We had a gym clean up in September.
  • We ordered vaulting table and table mats.
  • We held a reverse raffle in April.

Detroit:

  • Participated in the annual BOI meeting September 9th in Freemont Ohio.
  • Regular BOI meetings for the unit held throughout the year.
  • BOI members receive District Director Newsletter via email monthly.
  • Continue to have to take down gym equipment and average of 8 times yearly because of rentals. This gives us a good time to inspect and clean the equipment on a regular basis
