Year 4,5 6 Curriculum Overview / Science / English / Languages
- construct a simple series electrical circuit, identifying and naming its basic parts, including cells, wires, bulbs, switches and buzzers
-associate the brightness of a lamp or the volume of a buzzer with the number and voltage of cells used in the circuit / We will be learning about electricity this term. This term we will be:
  • learning about how electric charge flows through atoms,
  • building and drawing simple circuits,
  • recognising how a switch can open and close a circuit,
  • investigating electrical conductors and insulators
/ We follow the National Curriculum programme of study which incorporates reading and writing. This half term we will be focussing on writing a newspaper report, diary entry and short story based on the alien crash landing on the school field. Throughout the term we will be using drama to support and reinforce our writing.
In our GPS sessions we will focus on the use of a range for punctuation marks. We will learn how to use: commas, dashes and brackets for parenthesis, colons, semi colons, inverted commas and hyphens. We will also be developing understanding of passive voice and consolidating use of the tenses.
We will also focus on retrieving evidence from the text to support our answers in reading comprehension sessions. / French / Mandarin –
-engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinions and respond to those of others; seek clarification and help / This term the Year 4 children from Sharks will be learning French. We will be learning to use and write basic French greetings and to ask and answer questions.
This term the Year 5 and 6 children from Sharks will be learning Mandarin. We will be learning to say and write a number of greetings, numbers and colours.
History / PSHE
- a non-European society that provides contrasts with British history – one study chosen from: early Islamic civilization, including a study of Baghdad c. AD 900; Mayan civilisation c. AD 900; Benin (West Africa) c. AD 900-1300. / We will be learning about the Ancient Mayans. We will investigate:
  • who discovered the Mayans,
  • famous Mayan temples
  • significant Mayan achievements
  • Causes for the dissolution of the Ancient Mayan civilisation

  • Recognise the impact of diet, exercise, drugs and lifestyle on the way their bodies function.
  • Understand and apply the principles of a healthy and varied diet (D&T cooking and nutrition)
/ This term we will be thinking about what makes a healthy lifestyle. We will be thinking about: physical activity, healthy eating, hygiene, sleep, dental health and emotional health.
Art / Maths / PE
- to improve their mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials / We will be learning how to use watercolour paints and pencils. We will be focusing on the work of Monet and creating our own beachscapes. We will develop final pieces from watercolour pencil sketches made on the beach. / We follow the National Curriculum programme of study which incorporates fluency, reasoning and problem solving across content covered.
This half-term we will be focussing on: multiplication, division, perimeter, area, volume and statistics. / -play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending
