Clip Chart Behavior System

I use a clip chart behavior management system in my classroom that was adapted from Rick Morris’ clip chart system. This system promotes positive behavior choices and promotes students to self-monitor their behavior.

How it works:

Each student has a clothespin labeled with his/her name on it and begins the day in the middle of the chart on green “ready to learn.” During the course of the day students have the opportunity to move their clothespin up and down the chart according to their behavior choices. Positive behavior choices allow the student to move up a level and inappropriate behavior choices cause the clothespin to move down a level. I have a positive behavior catalog that students will have the opportunity to pick from if their clothespin moves up to the blue, purple, or pink. They could end up choosing more than one item from the catalog. Choices include: no shoes, eat lunch with Ms. Sikes, sit in Ms. Sikes’ chair, wear a hat to school, etc.

Clip Chart Advantages:

  • Students are acknowledged for positive behavior choices.
  • Students feel a sense of accomplishment when they make good behavior choices and move their clip up.
  • Students who have had to move their clip down always have the opportunity to improve and clip up later in the day, thus they continue to stay motivated to make positive behavior choices.

Here are the following rules that I will be modeling and discussing with your children this week:

  1. Listen when the teacher is talking.
  2. Follow directions the first time.
  3. Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself.
  4. Raise your hand and wait for permission to speak.
  5. Be safe, be kind, be honest.

I will be sending a behavior chart home daily in their take home folders. Please initial under each day showing you saw this. Here is an example below:

Rewards/Consequence:

  • Pink- prize from the Prize Pass Catalog Book
  • Purple/Blue- name on BINGO board for drawing for catalog book prize
  • Green-smiley face
  • Yellow-warning
  • Orange- a note sent home and minutes off recess (1 point taken off conduct)
  • Red- parent phone call, office referral depending on situation, no recess (2 points taken off conduct)
