Purpose / People credited with this unit standard are able to: carry out pre-operational checks on carton sealing machines; operate and maintain carton sealing machines; and comply with organisational and statutory hygiene and safety requirements.
Thisunit standard is for people who are employed in the further processing department at meat processing plants who are required to operate carton sealing machinery in accordance with company specifications.

Outcomes and evidence requirements
Outcome 1
Carry out pre-operational checks on carton sealing machines.
Evidence requirements
1.1Pre-operational checks are performed to manufacturer’s specifications and organisational requirements.
1.2Hazards or faults are identified and reported to supervisory staff in accordance with organisational requirements.
1.3Pre-operational documentation is completed in accordance with organisational requirements.
Outcome 2
Operate and maintain carton sealing machines.
Evidence requirements
2.1Machines are operated in accordance with manufacturer’s specifications and organisational requirements.
2.2Machinery, equipment, and facility malfunctions are identified and reported to supervisory staff in accordance with organisational requirements.
2.3Tasks are completed within the time and space allocation determined by product flow and organisational requirements.
2.4Machinery is cleaned and maintained in accordance with organisational requirements and manufacturer’s specifications.
2.5Consumables are refilled in accordance with organisational requirements.
Outcome 3
Comply with organisational and statutory hygiene and safety requirements.
Evidence requirements
3.1Company supplied clothing, and hygiene and safety equipment are worn and used in accordance with organisational and statutory requirements.
3.2Work methods comply with specified organisational and statutory requirements to minimise the risk of product contamination and injuries to the operator and others.
3.3Machinery, equipment, and packaging materials are handled in accordance with organisational and statutory requirements.
3.4Unsafe and unhygienic conditions are identified and reported to supervisory staff in accordance with organisational requirements.
3.5Waste material is removed and disposed of in accordance with organisational requirements.
3.6Equipment, operator and work area cleanliness comply with organisational and statutory requirements.
