Tournament Rules

  1. Triple entries in Individual Events are not allowed. A student may not enter both divisions of Debate or Extemp. No Mavericks. A student may enter one debate and two individual events. Each school must have 1 adult judge available for each round of competition.
  2. Awards will be given to finalists in Individual Events. Overall Sweepstakes trophies will be awarded to the top three schools, and IE and Debate Sweepstakes winners.
  3. Fees: $8.00 per entry; schools are financially responsible as of your receipt of confirmation of entries.
  4. A concession stand will be provided as well as coaches’ lounge. Please have students keep food and drink in the designated area.
  5. Tab will be open throughout the tournament. Results will become permanent 10 minutes after final tabulation.
  6. Sweepstakes will count best two entries.
  7. Campus regulations prohibit smoking both inside and outside the building.
  8. A student may not use a selection for more than one event.
  9. Student Congress breaks will be posted at the tournament.
  10. Sweepstakes calculations will be posted at the tournament.

EVENTS

Dramatic & Humorous Interp: The selection must be from a published, copy written source and delivered from memory. Literary merit will be considered. Minor stance alterations are allowed. No props or costumes are permitted. Maximum 10 minutes.

Duo Interp: The selection must be from a published, copy written source and delivered from memory. Literary merit will be considered. Minor stance alterations are allowed. No props or costumes are permitted. The contestants shall use offstage focus, and students should not make direct contact with their partner. Parts should be evenly balanced. Maximum 10 minutes.

Lincoln Douglas Debate:The topic will be the NFL November - December topic: Resolved: Wealthy nations have an obligation to provide development assistance to other nations.A debater more than ten minutes late for a round, through no fault of the tournament, will forfeit.Follow MSHSAA guidelines for computers in debate rounds.

Policy Debate:The topic will be the 2017-2019 MSHSAA/NFL topic: Resolved: The United States federal government should substantially increase its funding and/or regulation of elementary and/or secondary education in the United States.A team more than ten minutes late for a round, through no fault of the tournament, will forfeit.

Public Forum Debate: The topic will be the NFL November topic: Resolved: The United States should require universal background checks for all gun sales and transfers of ownership.Standard format. Sides will be determined by a coin flip prior to each round, including out-rounds where teams have already met in prelims. A team more than ten minutes late for a round, through no fault of the tournament, will forfeit.

Congress:Suburban Conference Legislation Packet will be used. NO SET DOCKET

USXIX: Contestants will draw three questions, select one, and have thirty minutes to prepare a speech. Topics will be taken from current events. Maximum 7 minutes.

Original Oratory: Speeches must be the original work of the contestant and delivery must be from memory. Max 10 mins.

Informative Speaking: Following NFL Rules. Max 10 minutes
