E Safety Lesson 3: Digital Footprint

Target Audience

Learning Objectives

To encourage students to think about what they post online and how they are perceived through the digital footprints they create every day of their lives.

Learning Outcomes

All students will: understand what is meant by a ‘digital footprint’

Most students will: be able to identify who might wish to access and make use of their digital footprint.

Some students will: be able to offer a number of different solutions to ensure their digital footprint remains positive

Lesson Overview

Timing: 60 minutes / Key Vocabulary: digital footprint, social media, online presence, cookie, cache
Preparation:
·  Students will need access to Vimeo.com. This might need to be unblocked by the network manager
·  Countdown timer
·  Access to teach-ict.com along with the student user name and password*
·  Headphones
·  Copy of plenary task 4-4-2.doc printed out for each student
Activity / Information / Resources / Time
Starter / Display slide 2 from the PPT and ensure that students understand what they need to do. Then display slide 3 before starting the countdown timer, set to 2 minutes.
Ask a few students to feedback points from their discussion to the rest of the class. / Whats your opinion.ppt / 5 mins
Transition / 2.5 minutes have been allocated to allow students time to go to the computers, log on, find the webpage and settle down to work / 2.5 mins
Activity 1 / Tell students to log onto teach-ict using the following link:
http://www.teach-ict.com/2016/ks3/sows/sow2/s_lesson3.php
They should follow the instructions on the page and complete the activities as shown.
When students have completed their task they should print out a copy of both their ‘homework task’ and their ‘homework answer sheet’. They should write their name on both sheets and hand them in to you in two separate piles. The reason for the names is so that you can match up homeworks to answer sheets next lesson.
Distribute a copy of the homework to every student and keep the answer sheets for the following lesson. / Access to teach-ict / 45 mins
Transition / 2.5 minutes have been allocated to allow students time to log off and return to their desks ready to begin the plenary activity. / 2.5 mins
Plenary / Hand out a printed copy of 4-4-2.doc to each student. Ask them to complete the sheet. / 4-4-2.doc / 5 mins
Homework / Complete the homework sheet written by a fellow student and bring it to the next lesson
Extension work / Find out what is meant by the following terms:
·  Cookies
·  Cache
Find out how to clear their cookies and web browser cache
Find out how to use ‘private browsing’ via the tools menu on the browser. Find out the purpose of private browsing.
