Fitness 2: Functional Fitness
In this unit children will improve and apply their basic skills through Fitness. They work on skills that link actions to identify personal movement patterns, spatial awareness, control and flow, activity understanding, stamina, strength, speed and power, endurance accuracy and flexibility. Throughout all principles of fitness children will develop an understanding that rationalises task completion.
In all Fitness activities, children think about task execution and how to use skills to gain speed, control, and space awareness whilst using individual expression.

Theme: Functional Fitness
Speed and AgilitySUGGESTED LEARNING ACTIVITIES
Pupils will learn and develop:
- Running fast in a competitive environment
- Movement when travelling including up, down, sideways, forwards, backwards, through etc.
- Running fast and changing direction indicating a direct linkage of movement
(a)Unselfish co-operation in sharing floor space
(b)Immediate response to instruction
(c)Travelling on floor space with frequent changes in speed and direction.
(d)Linkage of movement when travelling at speed
Warm Up
- Invent a warm-up activity that supplies everyone with the opportunity to move at speed when changing direction.
- Are you able to think up a game that includes speed and agility.
- Show me that you can setup the game as a team and apply the rules to the rest of the class.
- Can you control the game and solve any concerns expressed by your class mates?

Activity 1
Choose you running style carefully when you travel to gain distance on your partner working to steal you tail. (1x1 Tail Pairs)
- Are you able to travel through the class whilst avoiding contact with others?
- Can you introduce variations of speed and movement when travelling?
Pupils should demonstrate
(a)Co-operate with your partner throughout the game of pair tails.
(b)Express a variation of speed and direction change when participating.
(c)Control of body movement when travelling.

Activity 2
You are going to show me that you can run with speed and change direction automatically to avoid your tail being stolen. Team Tails: (Performed in groups each team will work to steal and collect opposing team’s tail whilst avoiding body contact).
- Can you work and support others in your team to remain in the game until it finishes?
- Are you able to travel at speed and include a variety of direction changes?
- Show me that you can communicate with your team to increase the chance of winning the game.
(a)Pupils are remembered to work as a team to increase their chances of game success.

Extension Activities
As an extension activity pupils should continue to work on linking in movement when travelling at speeds: Pupils should be empower to invent a game that includes speed work and direction change.
Pupils should setup this game as it shows empowerment for all. This could be recognised inside or outside, either as part of an additional PE lesson or in their own time.

Theme: Functional Fitness
Accuracy and Co-ordinationSUGGESTED LEARNING ACTIVITIES
Pupils will learn and develop:
- Adjusting their body with control and fluency for a higher rate of accuracy.
- Linking a series of body movements
- Incorporate speed and direction changes when focusing on co-ordination and accuracy.

Warm Up
Accuracy and co-ordination of movement will be tested throughout the theme of dodge ball. 1x1 Dodge Ball: Pupils will be in pairs with one the thrower and the other the dodger.
- Are you able to use the entire hall when running away from your partner?
- Show me that you can co-ordinate you body (weight transfer) when you throw the ball.
- Can you accurately throw the ball and catch your partner?
(a)Control when travelling at various speeds.
(b)Understanding that weight transfer and ball control (at the releasing stage) impact on accuracy when throwing.
(c)Controlled direction changes.
Activity 1
You are going to show me that you can work as a team and concentrate on accuracy when rolling the ball towards the bench to free your team mate allowing them back into the game. Bench ball (two teams divided by cones and when caught by a ball you sit at the side until your team mate hits the opposing teams bench)
- Are you able to dodge balls from the opposing team and remain in the game for a long period of time?
- Show me that you can roll the ball with accuracy to enable you team mates to join back in the game.
- Can you control you body movement to avoid falling on the ground?
(a)Pupils should adhere to the game rules to enable continuous play.
(b)Communication throughout the game should be evident.
(c)Accuracy when rolling the ball towards the opposing teams bench.
(d)Co-ordinating body movement when dodging catching and rolling balls.

Activity 2
Control body movement throughout and show me that you can combine accuracy when throwing with co-ordination when travelling and dodging. Frustration Dodge ball: Two teams divided by a line of cones with balls on top. When the opposing team gets struck out by a ball he/she travels to the opposing team’s bench and stands. They shout for and try to catch a flying ball and if successful enter back into the game.
- Are you able to accurately throw the ball when using various throwing techniques?
- Can you co-ordinate body movement when travelling and throwing?
- Show me that you can communicate with your team throughout the game.

Endurance and BalanceSUGGESTED LEARNING ACTIVITIES
Pupils will learn and develop:
- Their ability to complete whole or part body movement for more than 5 minutes.
- I can work at a steady pace for a prolonged period of time.
- An understanding on the type of activity that challenges my heart, lungs and whole body.
- I can achieve a balanced position to help me in a variety of activities.

Warm Up
Body movement and balance control will be tested throughout the game of Doctor Tag. When caught with a ball a part of one’s body loses its function thus making it hard to balance when moving.
- Show me that you can travel successfully while continuing to balance.
- Can you control body movement when balancing difficulty is increased?
- Are you able to travel throughout the game without falling as a result of balancing?

Activity 1
Team Frustration will introduce pupils to the concept of endurance. Participation continues for a set period of time (5-10 minutes). 3 teams and 1 bell between sees each team working collectively to hit an opposing team in order to win the game.
- Are you able to continue moving throughout the game?
- Can you frequently catch and pass the ball to maximise the chances of catching the opposing team.
- Show me that your team can work together and fluently pass the ball when using the entire hall space.

Activity 2
The group practise will introduce pupils to the concept of stamina (training for a longer duration of time). The 12 Minute cooper run will see pupils continuously run when controlling their speed.
- Show me that you are able to control your speed when running.
- Are you able to continue running without stopping throughout the duration of the run?
- Can you control your breathing as your heart, lungs and body are challenged throughout the run?.

Theme: Functional Fitness
Strength and FlexibilitySUGGESTED LEARNING ACTIVITIES
Pupils will learn and develop:
- A powerful action as a result of combining speed and strength.
- I challenge myself by attempting to lift most or all of my body off the ground.
- Their ability to recognise and stretch major muscle groups of my body.

Warm Up
Pupils will express their ability to jump and throw while being aware of their surroundings. Ball Tag: The class will select two catchers when the others run (escape). For an escape to get caught they have to be hit with the ball below the knees. They have to express jumping over the ball when running (when caught pupils have to complete 10 vertical jumps before continuing.
- Are you able to express your jumping ability throughout the game?
- Can you combine speed and strength when throwing the ball?
- Show me that you are able to travel around the hall without getting caught.

Activity 1
The class will express strength by part taking in a selection of challenges. Strength Circuits are explained below:
- Teddy bear balance

- Are you able to hold your body off the ground when staying in control?
- Can you complete each challenge without falling?

Activity 2
Pupils will learn that combining speed and strength creates a powerful movement. Frustration dodge ball – The class will be split up into two groups separated by a line of balls on cones. If a team hit the opposing team with a ball he/she travels to the opposing bench where he calls on his team member to through the ball, releasing him/her back into the game.
- Show me that you can combine speed and strength to throw the ball with height and release your team mate.
- Are you able to introduce weight transfer when throwing the ball?
- Can you stay in the game without getting hit by the opposing team?
- After game completion the class will be introduced to the major muscle groups in the body while stretching them as a cool down.
