DREAM BIG! SCHOLARSHIP2016

Description:The Dream Big! Scholarship Fund was established in 2004 by the Seattle Housing Authority (SHA) Higher Education Project to provide scholarship support for qualified students living in SHA housing or in a household that receives a SHA Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8).

Availability: At least two$1,000 scholarships will be awarded in 2016.

Eligibility: (Applicants mustmeetall of the criteria below)

  • Resident of Seattle Housing Authority Low-Income Public Housing orin a household that receives a SHA Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8);
  • Minimum GPA of 2.5;
  • Age 21 and under and will have graduated from high school or obtained a GED by Fall, 2016;
  • Plan to attend college full-time in the next academic year. College is defined as: a community college, technical school, or a four-year institution of higher education.

Distribution of scholarship funds:

  • Paid directly to the school for tuition, books and fees for the 2016-2017 academic year.

Scholarship selection process:

Scholarship recipients are selected by a committee from the Seattle Housing Authority Higher Education Project through review of completed application materials.

Deadline to apply: Applicationpostmarked or delivered to Dream Big! Scholarship Committee (address included on the application page) by 5 PM Thursday, March 31st, 2016.

Application packet must include:

  1. Submit a Personal Statement OR a Project (see below)
  1. Submit atypedpersonal statement of not more than 1000 words explaining:
  2. Why do you want to pursue post secondary education?
  3. What qualitiesdo you possess that will make you successful?
  4. What motivates you to further your education by going to college?
  5. Describe your future plans that relate to earning your degree or certificate.
  6. Include life experiences you have had that relate to your success as a student.

OR

  1. Submit aproject(examples include: video, photos, work of art, music, science project, film, etc.)
  2. Project must demonstrate your creativity, talent or a visible achievement.
  3. Include a typed300 – 350 word explanation of the project.
  4. Describe how this project relates to why you want topursue a college education.
  1. Two letters of recommendation. The letters must be written by adults who know you well, and who are not related to you. Letters can be written by a teacher, counselor, religious leader, coach, extra-curricular instructor, or another person who knows you well. Letters may be submitted in languages other than English.

Letters should include:

  1. Descriptions of your achievements and character
  2. Examples that highlight the qualities you have that will help you be a successful student
  1. The most up to date official high school transcript.
  1. A complete scholarship application form(see page 2).
  1. An official college transcript (if applicable).
