RUMORS

I’D LIKE TO POINT OUT THAT OUR “RUMOR MILL” HAS BEEN ALIVE AND WELL THIS PAST YEAR. UNLESS YOU HAVE THE FACTS, YOU REALLY SHOULD NOT BE CIRCULATING INFORMATION.

The best way to knock a chip off of someone’s shoulder is to pat him on the back.

Revision to the Rules & Regulations

II. PETS AND ANIMALS

1. Animals, except a pet cat as noted below, reptiles and noisy pets are not permitted.

2. A resident may have a pet cat that is strictly homebound and not a nuisance to the park. The pet cat must be registered with the park office and approved in writing by the Board of Directors.

3. Please do not feed or otherwise encourage wild or domestic animals to come into the park.

4. Animal pets of guests, except a pet cat that is strictly homebound and not a nuisance to the park, will not be permitted on the premises overnight.

5. Control and cleanup of animal pets of guests are the responsibility of the resident being visited.

6. If a pet cat has lived on the premises, the homeowner must disclose this fact to a renter or buyer.

THE RULE WILL BE IMPLEMENTED AS OF OUR APRIL 3 MEETING. FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO HAD A HOMEBOUND CAT PRIOR TO THIS IMPLEMENTATION, TO BE GRANDFATHERED IN, YOU MUST REGISTER THEM AT THE OFFICE. RESIDENTS WHO WISH TO BRING A HOUSEBOUND CAT INTO THE PARK IN THE FUTURE MUST ABIDE BY SOUTH WINDS REGISTRATION PROCEDURE.

A BIG thank-you to all my vote counters at the Annual Meeting, who came early & stayed late.

Once again thank you for all the help with spaghetti dinner. Without your help it would not be possible.
The artists and crafters put on great displays, which were surely enjoyed by all. A very special thank you to Mary Rapp and her team for doing a super job covering the rec. hall cushions. We had a very interesting season, thanks to the many that participated and put on workshops.
Distribution of funds and articles crafted will be mentioned in next month's breeze.
Your support and encouragement are appreciated.
Sincerely, Pauline Villeneuve
CLOUD NINE
Cloud 9 held their final event of the season on March 12th. Three open air trolley cars left Southwinds for a lovely ride by some of the best tourist attractions of the Sarasota area. The weather was perfect and a good time was had by all.

Thanks to everyone for their support to Cloud 9 Many thanks to our outgoing president Jean Kyle. May everyone have a great summer, where ever they may be.

VOLUNTEERS

THE HEART AND SOUL OF OUR PARK

WE ALL KNOW WHAT GREAT JOBS OUR VOLUNTEERS HAVE BEEN DOING FOR OUR PARK. WITHOUT THEIR HELP WE WOULD BE JUST ANOTHER “TRAILER PARK”. THE MANY FUNCTIONS THAT WE ENJOY WOULD NOT BE POSSIBLE, SO MAKE SURE TO THANK THOSE WHO ARE WILLING TO STEP UP AND WORK FOR YOU. SOMETIMES WE HAVE A TENDENCY TO CRITICIZE DECISIONS THAT THESE PEOPLE MAKE, BUT IF WE ARE NOT WILLING TO STEP UP AND HELP, PLEASE KEEP THESE CRITICISMS TO YOURSELF.

WE’D LIKE TO GIVE A SPECIAL RECOGNITION TO SOME VOLUNTEERS WHO HAVE GONE ABOVE AND BEYOND.

MOST OF OUR STREETS NEED TO BE EITHER RESURFACED OR SEALED. THIS IS A COSTLY PROJECT. GEORGE MANTON DECIDED THAT HE WOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR HIS STREET (33-41 SOUTHWINDS DRIVE) AND WITH THE HELP OF HIS NEIGHBORS HAS PUT FILLER/SEALER ON A SECTION OF IT. A TERRIC JOB!!!!!!!! HE WANTS TO FINISH THE STREET AND THE BOARD HAS GIVEN PERMISSION TO DO SO.

GEORGE WANTS TO GIVE A SPECIAL THANKS TO NEIGHBORS DON CONSALVO (#33) AND JIM MINEAULT (#31) FOR THEIR HELP.

WE WANT TO THANK ALL THREE OF THEM FOR A JOB WELL DONE. WE DO APPRECIATE THEIR EFFORTS

PICNIC REPORT

THE PICNIC IS OVER AS ARE MOST OF THE SEASONS FESTIVITIES.

WE WANT TO THANK EVERY ONE FOR JOINING THEIR FRIENDS AND NEIGHBORS AT OUR 21 YEAR BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION.

SOON MANY OF US WILL BE HEADING BACK TO OUR NORTHERN ABODES. BUT...... KEEP THE LIGHTS ON FOR WE SHALL RETURN!

A SPECIAL THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR MICHIGAN RESIDENTS AND THE MANY OTHER VOLUNTEERS WHO ASSISTED US. HERE AT SOUTHWINDS WE ARE SO FORTUNATE TO HAVE MANY WHO ANSWER THE CALL. AND AS THE SAYING GOES "MANY HANDS MAKE LIGHT WORK".

LET’S ENJOY OUR PARK!!!!

The turnout for the park picnic was large as usual. It makes some of us wonder why we don’t have more events in this lovely area. So some energetic volunteers have said: Let’s do something and they have!!! Two events are scheduled for the month of April. Come and enjoy!!

Shuffle News

March was a busy time for the Shuffleboard program with the Park Singles Tournament taking up most of the month and the Sara-Bay League completing its season. The Park Singles was won by John Carter with Keith Damschroder finishing in second place. Third place was captured by Walt Smith.

In the Consolation Bracket, Larry Proteau took first place, Bert Andrews took second, and Mimi Manton captured third place.

The Team finished the season in winning style by capturing the last meet with our arch-rival, Vista of Bahia-Vista Estates. The winning margin, however, was not sufficient to overcome the substantial advantage Vista had built over the season, so we finished solidly in second place.

The Annual Turkey Shoot was tried by 46 people and prizes were awarded to the three highest scores and also a booby prize for the low score. If you didn’t try it this year, come out next year for an afternoon of fun.

The Season Celebration and Awards Pizza Party was held at the Annex on Friday, March 30 with over forty in attendance. In addition to the presentation of the awards for competition achievements through the year, the program featured a rehearsal of the Shuffleboard Chorus which has now built a repertoire of three shuffleboard songs. The conclusion was that a few more practices may be in order before we go on tour!

Even though the formal seasonal activities of the Club have been completed, the usual daily mixers will be held at the courts every day except Sunday throughout most of April or as long as there are people interested in playing.

On Sunday, March 25th, South Winds last another of its longtime residents. Stanley Kochan #246, died, after a long illness. He was the last of our “Railroaders”. At one time there was twenty-one of this group in the park.

WE HAVE ONE 90 AND OVER BIRTHDAY IN APRIL. HAPPY BIRTHDAY WISHES TO MEL DEMING.

SENIOR MOMENTS

Everyone experiences episodes of forgetfulness. As we get older or observe older adults, we wonder if it is normal aging or something more sinister. The characteristics of these moments often offer clues.

If a person complains about memory loss and can describe details of the forgetfulness it is probably normal aging. In dementia, the person is unable to describe the event.

If one doesn’t get lost in familiar surroundings but sometimes pauses to remember the way – normal aging. If she gets lost in familiar territory, while walking or driving and takes a long time to return – Alzheimer’s or dementia should be a concern.

Occasional trouble finding the right word should not be worrisome but frequent word finding pauses and substituting descriptions of things are typical of dementia.

If a person has trouble operating common appliances like a dishwasher it’s a warning sign. Also if social skills decline or one has lost interest in social activities; it’s worth noting.

Concerns about memory loss should always be brought to your doctor.
