Director of Rugby
The role of the Director of Rugby is to take primary responsibility for the development and promotion of rugby across all age groups and abilities.
Essential Qualification: Level 2 or 3 Rugby Coaching Experience
Reports to and works with the Director of Co-curricular to deliver the defined strategy across the school.
Job description
- Manage and inspire a team of rugby coaches at all ages
- Improve the standard of rugby all the way up to the 1st XV on a playing and coaching level
- Coach rugby throughout the school, to all ages and ability levels
- Develop and manage the rugby fixtures programme
- Arrange the appropriate organization for fixtures across all age groups (referees, match teas, transport, pitches, changing rooms, medical as required).
- Manage a programme of pre-season and out of season training.
- Maintain positive and effective communication with all members of the Wrekin community, including pupils, parents, staff and outside agencies
- Work with the Director of External Relations to promote the school.
- Regularly review the budget, facilities, training equipment and playing kit with the Director of Co-curricular.
The main targets and performance indicators:
- To increase the numbers of participation, opting to play rugby in the Fifth and Sixth forms
- The fixture list, aiming to be comprehensive and challenging throughout all age levels
- Results, aim for healthy win/loss ratio verses higher standard of local/regional schools
- Representative honours (numbers selected throughout age group levels)
- Maintain the level of player safety, concussion awareness and medical cover (nurse, paramedic and rehabilitation)
Aim to develop and introduce:
- Inset sessions for rugby staff (establish continuity of coaching throughout age groups, admin, concussion awareness)
- Off season skills clinics (handpicked key positions throughout ages, external staff as an option here e.g. kicking coach)
- One term 15-a-side rugby fixtures (Second term for 7’s and any cup progression)
- Rugby scholarships (2-3 additions by the senior level, aim for multi-sport pupils)
- Provide advice on conditioning, weights programmes and nutrition.
- Basic video analysis for 1st & A teams.
- Establish relationships with potentially Sale, Worcester, Wasps academies
- Establish/maintain/develop relationships with local clubs such as Newport RFC and Telford RFC (which players are already affiliated to)
- Rugby tours both in the UK & abroad
- To introduce and develop a high performance programme particularly for the more elite level of players Managing and introducing policies around players workload (mainly from 16+) when expected to fulfil club commitments (training and matches)
- Develop and nurture the RFU core values throughout the school and beyond (Teamwork, Respect, Enjoyment, Discipline and Sportsmanship)
- Pre-season training (senior/junior)
- Host 7’s tournament (senior)
- Host Prep School festival (potential feeder schools)
- Letter of expectation to parents to help manage expectations, commitments and concussion awareness 4 R’s
- Concussion Awareness for players (classroom session with coach)
- Working with the marketing department, develop the ‘rugby experience’ attraction at Wrekin (use of twitter, facebook, adverts in Shropshire magazine/newspapers, advertising boards at county rugby clubs or match day programmes)
The Director of Rugby role profile is not exhaustive: it will be subject to periodic review and may be amended to meet the changing needs of the school. The post holder will of course be consulted.
Hours: Approximately 25 hours a week from the end of August to the end of March. Salary is flexible dependent on what else the candidate can offer. Accommodation might also be available.
A suitability for and preparedness to help with other sports and activities in a busy boarding environment would be a significant advantage. For the right candidate, opportunities for promotion might well be available at Wrekin.
