Course Description: This course is a rigorously paced study of plane and solid figures. Practice and theoretical concepts are stressed. Training in thinking by means of deductive proofs and constructions of figures is an essential part of this course.
Prerequisite: Algebra 1 Honors with 85 or above
Course Objectives:
- Prepare students for post-secondary education or work-force
- Prepare students to apply geometric principles to real-world situations
- Communicate mathematics through cooperative learning, investigating, and writing
- Apply concepts that will create better problem solving strategies
- Develop logical reasoning skills
- Demonstrate understanding of Postulates and Theorems by examples and a written explanation
Standards: South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Geometry and South Carolina College- and Career-Ready Mathematical Process Standards
Materials Needed: Textbook, 3 ringed-binder, loose-leaf paper, and pencils, compass, ruler, protractor, TI-30X IIS (scientific calculator) or TI-NSpire/TI-84 graphing calculator. Purchasing your own scientific calculator (TI-30X IIS) would be to your advantage.
Textbook: Holt McDougal Geometry Common Core Edition 2012
Online Resources (textbook, tutorial videos, homework help, interactivities)
Other Resources:
Important Dates:
Interim Reports: 9/19/17, 11/20/17
End of 1st 9 weeks: 10/23/17End of 2nd 9 weeks: 1/12/18
Final Exams: 1/9-11/18Report Cards: 11/2/17, 1/18/18
Exam Exemption Policy: Seniors- B average, total absences (excused or unexcused) may not exceed 4. Underclassmen may not exempt the exam.
+ - * ÷ < > = % ≠ ≤ ~ ≥ + - * ÷ < > = % ≠ ≤ ~ ≥ + - * ÷ < > = % ≠ ≤ ~ ≥ + - * ÷ <
General Rules: Be on time. Be prepared. Be respectful. Be responsible.
Preparation for Class: Students are to bring the textbook, pencil, paper, completed assignments, calculator to each class.
Expectations for Class:
- Everyone has a right, and should expect to learn
- Positive, healthy environment that is conducive to learning
- Be polite and respect each other
- Orderly/appropriate conduct, activeon-task involvement in learning
- Hard work - as it is necessary for learning
- Spend adequate time practicing and preparing prior to class
- Study and work independently – as this course is rigorously paced
Earned Consequences: The teacher may: require after-school detention, make a phone call to the parent, hold a conference with the student, or request a parent-teacher conference. The Chesterfield County Student Handbook for Grades 6-12, outlines the official progressive discipline policy which may be activated based on the student’s behavior and the judgement of the administrator.
Late Work:
Students are expected to complete all assignments on time. Late work will only be accepted if the student was absent the day it was due and it must be turned in when the student returns to class. Work not presented when the student returns will receive a grade of zero. Homework will be discussed in class each day. If you are unprepared with homework, but found to be completing it while it is being reviewed, you will not earn any credit. Other work (projects, etc) being turned in late will lose 10% for each day late.
Missed/Make-up Work:
It is the student’s responsibility to obtain notes, assignments, or any other pertinent information missed during an absence. Make-up work will only be given to students who are absent. Students will have the same number of days absent to turn in make-up work. For example, if a student was absent 1 day, the student has 1 day to turn in their make-up work. If a student is absent 5 days, the student has 5 days to turn in their work. Full credit will be allowed. Make-up work not completed on time will receive a grade of zero.
Grades: Students will be evaluated in a variety of ways.

My Unsolicited Advice on How to Study and Learn Mathematics
We all learn and study differently. Some of you are visual learners, some of you must write every step down. Some of you have succeeded in the past with very little work, and some have struggled every day with mathematics. From my experience, what has worked for you in the past may not work for you as you go into this course. Cramming the night before a test may have worked to get you a good grade, but has it helped you to thoroughly understand the concepts taught? This will be important in Geometry. As a result, those A’s and B’s you got in prerequisite courses may not reflect what you actually learned and remember. On top of learning totally new material, you are responsible for concepts learned in Algebra. You will be asked to solve equations and inequalities, factor expressions, find roots, simplify radicals, etc. Hopefully, these guidelines will help you manage your time and learn to study efficiently and successfully.
- Math is not a spectator sport. You must become actively involved by practicing in class, studying, and doing the homework each night. There is no room for excuses or slackness.
- You must pay attention in class.
- Take good notes and keep them organized. You will be given a “skeleton” of notes. You must personalize them by adding what you need.
- Do the homework. Looking up the answers or getting them from someone else will not cut it.
- Read the book and look over the examples.
- Get help early and often. Don’t wait until a quiz or test is announced. We will have 2-3 quizzes per week. Be prepared every day as if you are going to take a quiz.
- Use all available resources (teacher, peers, youtube videos, textbook website, etc.) to help you be successful.
Geometry can be challenging. The reality is, some will probably have to work harder at this course than they ever have before. Even if you have made all A’s in math before, or have never asked for math, you may have to now. Don’t get discouraged, GET HELP. It is readily available and free. Your grade in this class greatly depends on the amount of effort you are willing to make.
