Results

The following results represent data collected during the third quarter of fiscal year 2015-16. Percentages over 50% are shaded to aid in interpretation. Results from questions that allow respondents to mark “all that apply” may not add to 100% because each respondent may mark more than one answer. The percentages for those types of survey items represent the number of responses divided by the total number of responses for the particular item. Reported percentages in the narratives are rounded to the nearest whole number; please consult the relevant tables for more precise percentages. Percentages in tables may not add to 100% due to missing data for the survey item.

There were 107 Medication Misuse Sidewalk surveys completed in quarter three, with 76.6% being female, 91.3% white, and 73.1% 65 years of age or older. Thirteen respondents said they were family members of a service member. A large majority (88.4%) indicated that medication misuse was a problem in their community. Most of those surveyed (97.2%) thought it was not okay to share medications with others, while 92.5% said if they knew of a safe and legal way to dispose of their medications they would use it. Over half (53.8%) said they had not seen or heard messages encouraging them to talk to their kids or grandchildren about using other people's medications, while 55.1% said they were aware of permanent safe medication disposal sites. Of those who were aware of the disposal sites, only 36.6% said they had used the sites to dispose of their medications. When asked how they dispose of their medications, 24.3% said they flushed them down the toilet, 31.9% threw them in the trash, 42.9% kept them in case they needed them, 38.2% contacted their pharmacy about what to do, and 46.7% dropped them off at the police department or other disposal location.
