2011 Scholarship Award Program
Undergraduate Awards:
Most undergraduate awards are for full-time students (enrolled in 12 hours or more per semester) pursuing an undergraduate degree in occupational safety & health or a closely related field.
Those that apply to part-time students (less than 12 hours per semester) are noted with a ☼
Those that apply to students pursuing an associate degree are noted with a ▲. Please refer to FAQ # 18 for more information.
- U.S. citizenship is not required unless specified.
Special restrictions are listed under each award.
America Responds Memorial Scholarship
One award @ $1,000
Students who have experience working as an Emergency Responder will have priority on this award. Student must be a U.S. citizen.
ASSE Construction Safety Scholarship
One award @ $1,500
Priority will be given to students with an emphasis in construction safety.
ASSE Diversity Committee Scholarship
One award @ $1,000
This award is open to any individual regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, personal beliefs, age, sexual orientation, physical challenges, geographic location, university or specific area of study.
ASSE Foundation Military Service Scholarship – NEW AWARD
One award @ $1,000
Students that have served in the military will have priority on this award.
BCSP – Paul S. Adams Professional Scholarship
One award @ $1,000
BCSP – Bradley D. Giles Technician/Technologist, Supervisory Scholarship
One award @ $1,000
Central Indiana ASSE Jim Kriner Memorial Scholarship - NEW AWARD
Three awards - one @ $3,000 and two @ $1,000 each
Priority will be given to Indiana residents attending school in Indiana or anywhere in the U.S. or to non-residents attending an Indiana university. In addition, students attending IndianaUniversityand IndianaStateUniversity will receive priority on the $1,000 scholarships.
Columbia-Willamette Chapter President Scholarship
One award @ $1,000
Priority will be given to residents of Oregon or Washington state attending school within the state, to non-residents attending school within Oregon or Washington state or to residents attending school anywhere in the U.S.
C N A Foundation Scholarship
Two awards @ $4,650 each
Gerry Eaker Memorial Scholarship sponsored by UPS
Four awards @ $5,250 each plus conference opportunity.
Students may also be provided with the opportunity to attend SAFETY 2011 in Chicago from June 12-15, 2011.
David G. Kraemer Distinguished Service Award Scholarship
One award @ $2,000 each
Flatiron Construction Safety Scholarship
One award @ $4,650
Priority will be given to students with an emphasis in construction safety.
George Gustafson HSE Memorial Scholarship sponsored by the Texas Safety Foundation
One award @ $2,500 each
Priority will be given to students residing in Texas or attending a Texas university.
Gold Country Section & Region II Scholarship
One award @ $1,000
Priority will be given to students that reside within the Region II area.
Greater Baton Rouge Chapter – Don Jones Excellence in Safety Scholarship ☼ ▲
One award @ $1,500
Priority will be given to students attending SoutheasternLouisianaUniversity in Hammond, LA, attending any college or university within Louisiana or within the southeast U.S. region (in that order). Students pursuing an associate or bachelor degree are eligible; however, ASSE general or professional membership is required if applicant is a part-time student.
Greater Boston Chapter Leadership Award
Two awards - one @ $2,000 and one @ $1,000
Priority will be given to members from the following chapters: Greater Boston, Connecticut Valley, Granite State, Maine, Nutmeg or Worcester County, or to any student who is a spouse or child of any ASSE New England chapter member, or to any ASSE student member that belongs to a New England student section.
Greater Chicago Chapter Scholarship
One award @ $1,000
Priority will be given to students residing in or attending school within the Region V area.
GulfCoast Past President’s Scholarship ☼
Two awards @ $1,000 each
ASSE general or professional membership required if applicant is a part-time student.
Harold F. Polston Scholarshipsponsored by the Middle Tennessee Chapter
One award @ $2,000
Priority will be given to students that belong to the Middle Tennessee Chapter, attending Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN, Murray State University in Murray, KY and those that live in the Region VII area (in that order).
Harry Taback 9/11 Memorial Scholarship
One award @ $1,000
Student must be a natural born United States citizen.
Heart of America Scholarship
One award @ $1,000
Priority will be given to students attending University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, MO or Pittsburgh State University in Pittsburgh, KS or to those attending a university in KS or MO, or to those attending a university within Region V (in that order).
ISNetworld Scholarship
One award @ $1,000
Students living in OK, TX, NM, LA or AK will receive award priority.
Keith Bain Scholarshipsponsored by the Middle Tennessee Chapter
One award @ $2,000
Priority will be given to students that belong to the Middle Tennessee Chapter, attending Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, TN, Murray State University in Murray, KY and those that live in the Region VII area (in that order).
Liberty Mutual Scholarship
Two awards @ $4,500 each plus conference opportunity
Students may also be provided with the opportunity to attend SAFETY 2011 in Chicago from June 12 – 15, 2011.
Linda & Brad Giles Scholarship – NEW AWARD
Two awards @ $1,500 each
Priority will be given to students attending a school with an ASAC/ABET accredited safety program. Priority on the second award will be given to an Iraq/Afghanistan vet.
Marsh Risk Consulting Scholarship
One award @ $1,000
New England Area Future Leadership Award
One award @ $1,500
Priority will be given to students residing in the New England area, or the Region VIII area (in that order).
Northeastern Illinois Chapter Scholarship
Two awards @ $2,000 each
Priority will be given to students that attend NorthernIllinoisUniversity in DeKalb, IL, members of the NE IL chapter, regardless of school location, offspring of NE IL chapter members, regardless of school location or to students attending school in the northeastern Illinois region, defined as the area north of I-74 contained within the Illinois state borders.
North Florida Chapter Safety Education Scholarship ☼
One award @ $1,000
Priority will be given to part-time or full-time students that belong to the North Florida Chapter, full-time students that attend any Florida college or university or to full-time students that attend an ASAC/ABET accredited program nationwide (in that order). ASSE general or professional membership is required if applicant is a part-time student.
PDC Scholarship sponsored by the Practice Specialty Groups
Two awards up to $1,200 each
This scholarship provides the full ASSE Professional Development Conference experience including airfare, hotel, meals and registration for SAFETY 2011 in Chicago from June 12-15, 2011. Students must apply and meet the basic criteria of an ASSE Foundation undergraduate scholarship.
PermianBasin Chapter Endowment
One award @ $1,000
Priority will be given to students that attend a school within the Region III area.
Puget Sound Chapter Martin Brown Memorial Scholarship ☼
One award @ $1,000
Priority will be given to full-time students that belong to the Puget Sound Chapter and ASSE members (general or professional level) attending school on a part-time basis that belong to the Puget Sound Chapter.
Region IV – Edwin P. Granberry Scholarship
One award @ $1,000
Priority will be given to students that attend school within the Region IV area.
Rixio Medina & Associates Hispanics in Safety Scholarship
One award @ $3,000
Bilingual student (Spanish-English) required; Hispanic ethnicity preferred. Student attending an ASAC/ABET accredited safety program is also preferred.
Scott Dominguez - Craters of the Moon Chapter Scholarship ☼
One award @ $1,000
Priority will be given to students that reside within the Craters of the Moon Chapter, Idaho and the Region II (MT, ID, WY, CO, UT, NV, AZ, NM) area (in that order). Students that are an employee or dependent of a sponsoring organization, serving the country through active duty in the armed forces or honorably discharged, a member of the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, FFA, 4H, etc. in previous years, recipients of awards from service organizations or have provided volunteer service to an ASSE chapter in a leadership role will also receive priority on this award. ASSE general or professional membership required if applicant is a part-time student.

Southwest Chapter Roy Kinslow Scholarship
One award @ $1,000
Priority will be given to students attending SoutheasternOklahomaStateUniversity in Durant, OK or to any student from the Southwest Chapter area attending a school within the Region III boundaries.
Texas Safety Foundation Scholarship
One award @ $2,500
Priority will be given to students residing in Texas or students attending a Texas university.
The ASSE Oklahoma City Chapter Scholarship – NEW AWARD
One award @ $1,000
Students attending University of CentralOklahoma in Edmond, OK will have award priority.
The Bechtel Group Foundation Scholarship for Safety & Health
Three awards @ $4,000 each
Priority will be given to students with an emphasis in construction safety attending MurrayState in Murray, KY, Montana Tech in Butte, MT or CentralWashingtonUniversity in Ellensburg,WA.
The Charlie Darnell HSE Memorial Scholarship sponsored by the Texas Safety Foundation▲
One award @ $2,500
Priority will be given to students attending TexasStateTechnicalCollege in Waco, TX pursuing an associate degree. Student must be enrolled in at least 12 semester hours and have completed 24 hours toward their degree. ASSE student membership is not required.
The Georgia Chapter Scholarship
One award @$1,000
Students residing in Georgia will have award priority
Thomas W. Pollock Memorial Scholarship - NEW AWARD
One award @ $1,000
Priority will be given to students pursuing a PhD with an intent to teach safety studies at the undergraduate or graduate level.
UPS Diversity Scholarship
Two awards @ $5,250 each plus conference opportunity
Student must be of a minority ethnic or racial group and must be a U.S.citizen. Students may also be provided with the opportunity to attend SAFETY 2011 in Chicago from June 12-15, 2011.
URS Safety Scholarship
One award @ $6,000 plus conference & internship opportunity
Student attending school with an ASAC/ABET-accredited safety program is required. Student may also be provided with the opportunity to attend SAFETY 2011 in Chicago from June 12-15, 2011 and an internship that includes salary & living expenses.
Utah Chapter ASSE Scholarship
Two awards @ $1,000 each
Students residing in Utah or Wyoming will have award priority.
Warren K. Brown Scholarship
One award @ $1,000
Priority will be given to students attending MurrayStateUniversity in Murray, KY or IndianaStateUniversity in Terre Haute, IN.
William C. Ray, CIH, CSP Arizona Scholarship
Two awards at @ $2,500
Priority will be given to students residing in Arizona or within the Region II area.
Graduate Awards
Graduate awards are for full-time students (enrolled in 9 hours or more per semester) pursuing a graduate degree in occupational safety & health or a closely related field. U.S. citizenship is not required unless specified. Special restrictions are listed under each award.

One award @ $1,000
Thompson Scholarship for Women in Safety
One award @ $1,000
Priority will be given to female students. ASSE student membership is not required.

- When applying for more than one scholarship – only fill out one application.
- The same application should be used for both undergraduate and graduate programs. Please fill out the information that is relevant to your status.
Program Rules:
- Incomplete or late applications will be disqualified.
- Applicants must graduate in May 2011or later to be eligible for any of these awards.
- Previous recipients of ASSE Foundation scholarship awards are eligible to receive subsequent awards.
- All ASSE Foundation scholarships (except for the Thompson Scholarship for Women in Safety and the Charlie Darnell HSE Memorial Scholarships) require ASSE student membership that costs $15 per year. To obtain an application for student membership, contact ASSE’s Customer Service department at 847-699-2929 or download the application at Student membership applications must be received via fax or U.S. Mail only.
