Course Description
School of Rock 1 provides an opportunity for you as the student to learn new instruments, be introduced to the basics of music theory, and explore your own creative writing, both in musical form and lyric performance. Students will learn the elements of performance, musical analysis, and lyric-writing in the context of contemporary music.
Course Units
Instrumental playing and songwriting will be focused throughout the entire course.
1. Basic Music Fundamentals 5. Song Form and Analysis
2. Piano Fundamentals 6. Lyric Writing
3. GarageBand Basics 7. Musical Texture/Instrumentation
4. Melody and Harmony 8. Bands
Facilities and Equipment
This class is fortunate enough to have extremely high quality facilities and equipment and we need to keep them in the current condition they are in.
1. No food or drink allowed in the classroom. Eat before school starts!
2. Head phones will be put back in the correct place and wrapped up properly.
3. Before leaving the class, each workstation will be locked up and cleaned.
4. Before leaving the class, each computer needs to be fully shut down.
5. Students will store any instruments in a designated area as assigned by Mr. Rexroat.
6. Any instruments or equipment borrowed from the school must be treated with extreme care!
7. NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES WITHOUT TEACHER CONSENT.
Materials
Students will need the following materials to be successful in this course.
- Black Binder
- Pencils (no pens)
- Notebook Paper or Spiral Notebook
Classroom Rules of Conduct
Students are responsible for behaving in the classroom in a manner that is conducive to a positive learning environment. Students will respect themselves, their peers, and instructor regardless of their differences, Students must be respectful to the uniqueness, the diversity, and worth of others in the classroom at all times.
Course of action for inappropriate behavior will be as follows:
1. Verbal Warning
2. Parental Notification
3. Teacher Issued Detention
4. Involvement of Disciplinary Action with Deans
5. Removal from School of Rock 1
Grading Procedure
Students will be graded in the following categories.
Homework - 15% of 18 Week Grade
Other – 5% of 18 Week Grade
Projects – 30% of 18 Week Grade
Performances - 30% of 18 Week Grade
Tests and Quizzes – 20% of 18 Week Grade
Final Exam - 10% of Semester Grade
The final written exam will be worth 10% of the semester grade.
Date of Final Performance – Thursday, December 8th
Students will perform in a final performance on Thursday, December 8th at 7pm in the OEHS Auditorium. This performance is mandatory.
