Aramco Educators to Saudi Arabia Program – A fully funded 10 day study tour of Saudi Arabia, examining “education, history, culture, industry, and global relations.” The goal of the program is to produce educators knowledgeable about Saudi Arabia who can serve as a resource, to provide new ideas for classrooms, and to provide connections between educators, officials, and professionals.

Fulbright Program: The Fulbright program seeks to support cross cultural interaction and understanding by providing opportunities for research, study, and teaching at the graduate and professional levels in foreign countries.

Fulbright Teacher Exchange: Fulbright coordinates teacher exchanges between American and foreign teachers. Trade places with a teacher from another country and teach their classes while they teach yours. Teachers maintain their current salary, but other expenses are paid for by participants.

Goethe Institute TOP Study Tour – The Goethe Institute offers four study tours a summer on the theme of Modern Germany. All expenses are paid, including travel to and from WashingtonD.C., the departure point of the program. Preference is given to educators who have conducted professional development using TOP curriculum materials (available free of charge), but all are welcome to apply.

International Travel Grant for Teachers
This grant allows middle school and high school teachers to participate in a two week exchange program with one of the following countries: Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Colombia, El Salvador, Georgia, Ghana, Guatemala,Honduras, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Nicaragua, Senegal, Tajikistan,Turkmenistan, and Ukraine.

KeizaiKohoCenter Teacher Fellowship: A two week fellowship program which provides for transportation to and from Japan, accommodations, travel, and meetings with Japanese educators, business leaders and government officials. AshbrookCenter: Offers a series of summer institutes that will assist teachers in deepening and broadening both their understanding and appreciation of American history. The focus of the institutes will be the substantive study of American history. The discussions will revolve around original historical documents and their use in the classroom. These institutes are offered at no charge, and each teacher will receive a $500 stipend for participating. All meals and housing in apartments at AshlandUniversity will be provided. Graduate Credit also available.

Bill of Rights Institute: Teacher development program that focuses on ready-to-use lessons based on primary source material. Teachers will receive instructional material to bring back to the classroom.

Center for Civic Education, Project Citizen: These regional institutes bring teachers together from across the country to partake in professional development based on Project Citizen, a set of nationally recognized curricular materials designed to teach students how to participate effectively in the democratic process. All expenses are paid and a free set of Project Citizen classroom materials is provided.

Center for Civic Education, We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution: A fully funded three week seminar focusing on major works of political, constitutional, and democratic theory and the challenges of teaching these works through various national standards. The Civil War Preservation Trust: The Civil War Preservation Trust (CWPT) will host its Eighth Annual Teacher Institute from July 24-26, 2009 in Spotsylvania County, VA. This free weekend will feature workshops, battlefield tours of Chancellorsville and Fredericksburg, entertainment, speakers, and networking opportunities.

Dar al Islam Teachers Institutes, Understanding and Teaching about Islam: Dar al Islam offers regular summer institutes to help educators learn more about Islam by placing them in contact with both academic and traditional scholars of Islam. The two week institute, room, board, and supplies are covered by Dar al Islam. Travel costs are paid by participants, and optional graduate credit from New MexicoHighlandsUniversity available at a nominal cost.

Foundation for Teaching Economics: A week-long course on how to teach economics concepts using events from U.S. History. It is called "Economic Forces in American History." They also have courses on Economics and the Soviet Union, Economics and the Environment, and one in which high school teachers have their own session part of the day and watch high school juniors go through their own program. Some courses are on-line, others are on various campuses around the country.

Gilder Lehrman Summer Seminars, TAH Grant: Funded by the TAH Grant, the Gilder Lehrman Institute offers a one week course of study in American History. Teachers produce curricular materials as a result of their experience. In 2006 the Institute sponsored 21 sessions on a variety of topics. Books, food, lodging and a $500 stipend are provided.

HolocaustMuseum: Offers several programs including a one week, fully funded seminar on advanced historical and pedagogical issue related to the Holocaust, and a free summer conference. Fellows are expected to implement community outreach projects as a result of the seminar, and report back in a follow up conference the following year. Teachers in relevant content areas, administration, or library sciences, with at least five years experience teaching the Holocaust, are welcome to apply.

Indiana University Bloomington, West European Studies: The National Resources Center at Indiana University provides travel grants and research stipends to educators interested in traveling to IU to conduct research or professional development, as well as lesson plan grants of up to $2,000 for educators to travel, take a class, or conduct research in pursuit of designing a new unit of study on western Europe which meets local and national standards. The Center also offers an annual two week residential summer institute.

James Madison Fellowships: Financial support of up to $24,000 towards a M.A., M.A.T., or M.Ed. degree with a focus on American History, Government, Constitutional history, political institutions, or political theory. Applicants agree to teach in a public school for one year for each year of support received. Participants may attend either part time or full time.

The Massachusetts Historical Society: Offers fellowships to public and/or parochial/independent schoolteachers and library media specialists during the summer of 2008. The fellowships carry a stipend of $4,000 for four weeks of on-site research at the MHS. Applications are welcome from any K-12 teacher who has a serious interest in using the collections at the MHS to prepare primary-source-based curricula in the fields of American history, language arts, or science. Monticello-Stratford Hall Summer Institute for Teachers: A three week interdisciplinary institute in Colonial American history using the historic grounds of Virginia, including Monticello, Stratford Hall, Williamsburg, and Mount Vernon. Participants will be awarded 6 graduate credits from the University of Virginia. The program cost is $650, but lodging and transportation expenses are provided. Scholarships are available.

National Council for the Social Studies, Annual Conference: The NCSS annual conference provides a chance to interact with historians and teachers, featuring keynote speakers, sessions, workshops, and clinics.

National Consortium for Teaching About Asia (NCTA): The NCTA offers 30-hour seminars on East Asian history and cultures that incorporates primary-source selections from the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean traditions. Participants are paid a professional stipend upon completion of the seminar, and are responsible for additional educational activities following the seminar.

National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Fellowships: The National Endowment for the Humanities is an independent grant-making agency of the Federal Government. Each year the NEH’s Division of Education Programs offers teachers opportunities to study humanities topics in a variety of Summer Seminars and Institutes. National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Landmarks in American History: These one-week workshops provide an opportunity for community college educators to engage in the study and discussion of important topics in American history. They give participants direct experiences in the interpretation of significant historical sites and the use of archival and other primary historical evidence. Landmarks Workshops present the best scholarship on a specific landmark or related cluster of landmarks, enabling participants to gain a sense of the importance of historical places, to make connections between what they learn in the Workshop and what they teach, to advance their own scholarship, and to develop enhanced teaching materials for their classrooms.

The Presidential Academy: Leads secondary school teachers in an in depth study of the American Revolution, The Civil War, and the Civil Rights Movement. Studies based on primary source material. Conducted by professors and Pulitzer Prize winning authors. Very competetive.

The Richard W. Riley Summer Institute for Teachers of Government. For high school and middle school teachers. Participants spend a week in WashingtonDC where they meet government and non-government officials. Participants also attend lectures by political scientists.
Street Law: Has a one week Supreme Court Institute for Teachers that is held in June at GeorgetownLawSchool and includes reserved seats in the Supreme Court one of the last few Mondays of the Court's year. They have shorter versions in some other locations, but they obviously don't include the Supreme Court visit.

World Affairs Councils of America: National Teachers Workshop on South Asia: A three day workshop providing in depth analysis and discussion of current developments in South Asia. Teachers are eligible if they use the “World in Transition” Curriculum Materials. All expenses in WashingtonD.C. paid, participants cover their own travel costs to D.C.

White House Internship: Interns work in a Whitehouse office, and participate in special lectures, tours, and volunteer opportunities. Open to U.S. citizens, aged 18 or older, enrolled in graduate or undergraduate study, or who have recently who have recently graduated from such a program. No financial support is provided.

Delaware TAH Grants: Funded by the Federal TAH Grant, this program puts Delaware teachers in contact with writers, university faculty, and museum experts in order to enhance educator knowledge and produce curricular materials. Participants attend a summer institute and a series of workshops throughout the year. Transportation, food and lodging, and a stipend are provided.
Historical Literacy Project:
Delaware Council for the Social Studies: The Delaware chapter of the NCSS provides leadership within Delaware regarding curricular and content issues, and provides a number of opportunities for development, recognition, and professional collaboration.

Center for Economic Education and Entrepreneurship: The CEEE sponsors a variety of programs and workshops to enhance the understanding of Delaware educators and students regarding economics, finance, and entrepreneurship, including how to integrate these subjects into other content areas.

Delaware Geographic Alliance, Summer Institute: A one week long summer institute to enhancing educators’ knowledge of a variety of geographical issues, with a focus on classroom application. No background in geography is necessary. Other workshops are offered throughout the year.
