English Class Policies – Mrs. Julie Galindo

Rules and Guidelines:

In order to provide a classroom environment that encourages optimum learning opportunities for all students, the teacher expects the students to follow the school’s guidelines for behavior as well as these expectations for behavior:

  1. Be on time to class and in your seat when the bell rings.
  2. Refrain from eating and/or drinking in class.
  3. Follow the directions of the teacher.
  4. Show respect for people and property.
  5. Raise your hand if you have something to say or if you need help.
  6. Ensure that your cell phones, IPods, etc. are put away and on silence mode.

If the student cannot comply with these expectations the teacher will:

  1. Remind the student
  2. Have a teach/student conference
  3. Refer the student to his/her Grade Level Coordinator (GLC)
  4. Have a parent/student/teacher conference

I expect you to be on time to class daily. If you are tardy, the school wide tardy policy will be enforced. Please refer to the DiamondBarHigh School planner for the tardy policy.

Help Keep the Classroom Clean and Orderly!

  1. Leave your table area clean. Report to the teacher any marks (pencil, pen, gum) left by a previous student.
  2. Return all items used during class time to their appropriate places.
  3. To make sure that the above requests are complied with, I will dismiss the class only when I have checked the room and the class is seated and quiet. The bell does not dismiss you, I do.

Late Work, Absences, and Make-Up Work:

1. No late work will be accepted for daily homework assignments. Assignments, such as essays or projects worth 30 points or more may be turned in late with a five (5) point penalty for everyday it is late. You have three (3) school days after the due date to turn in a late assignment. Late assignments will not be accepted after this time period.

2. Students who have legitimate absences may turn in make-up work. The student is responsible for arranging all make-up work:

For tests or special instructions, arrange to see the teacher to set up an appointment during lunch.

Generally, a student should turn in make-up work within the number of days he/she has been absent. If absent for three days, for example, the student should turn in work in three days. Exceptions should be cleared with the teacher.

Grades

The grades will be based on a point system. Points will be given to all assignments, class-work in the composition book, activities and tests/quizzes. Tests, essays and group projects will be worth more points than daily class work/homework assignments.

Six-week, twelve-week, and semester grades will be assigned on the basis of the percentage of possible points that have been accumulated since the beginning of the semester. Points are cumulative over the semester and cannot be made up with last minute work. So try to turn in every assignment. Zero points on assignments are detrimental to percentage-based grades.

GRADING SCALE:

90-100A

80-89B

70-79C

60-69D

Below 60F

NOTE:

I do not round grades. To explain if the student has an 89% (regardless of the 10th percentile point) it is considered a B+.

BOOKS

The textbook for the class is the assigned literature book which can be checked out at the library. Please do not write in your textbook.

Other books that we will read through out the year will also be checked out at the library (LINC) or you may purchase them if you desire. There will not be extra credit offered if you choose to purchase your own book.

In addition, all students are expected to read outside of class. This should be a novel or other book that is at your independent/instructional reading level and should be a book that you are interested in reading. It should be a book that is consistent with your and your parents’ standards for appropriate reading material. You will keep of record of your reading and complete written and oral reports when assigned.
