-to give expression to imaginative ideas through oral, written and performative means such as experimenting with simple sound and word patterns in creating rhymes and poems based on given models (E.D.c)
Learning Objectives
- Motivate pupils to learn about how moving one’s body like singing and dancing is a means to socialize, to communicate with others and to express one’s emotions
- Integrate music and physical education into the English curriculum
- Encourage pupils to exercise their imagination
Programme Outline
After watching a TV video for the umpteenth time, Tommy and Alice run out of ideas on what to do to pass their time. Their neighbour, Lucy walks by and invites them to go with her to Uncle Teddy. Tommy feels hesitant and Alice wonders who Uncle Teddy is. However on meeting Uncle Teddy, the children begin to discover what great fun it is to move their body around. Uncle Teddy teaches them how to bounce like a tennis ball, how to perform simple action rhymes and above all how to exercisetheir imagination with their body movements to be different kinds of animals. The children finally find delight in exercising and moving their body around.
Communicative Functions
- Identify simple objects and describe their sizes, shapes and colours
- State opinions and express feelings
Suggested Activities:
- Motivate the class by asking pupils what outdoor activities they do in their spare time. Write the pupils’ answers on the board. Highlight to the pupilsthose activities related to this programme, such as dancing, singing, etc.
- Briefly introduce the programme outline to the class. Encourage the pupils to move their body according to the lyrics of the songs while they are watching the programme. Teachers may find it useful to watch this programme in a spacious room where pupils can sing, dance and move their body around.
- Give out Copymaster 1 to pupils. Encourage pupils to read the action rhyme aloud. Draw pupils’ attention to the words that rhyme with ‘bounce’.

- Pupils complete Part 2a in Copymaster 2 after viewing the programme. Ask pupils to read the action rhymes together before and after the task. Draw pupils’ attention to the repetition and encourage them to perform the action while they are reading out the rhymes aloud.
- In Part 2c of Copymaster 3, pupils are encouraged to stretch their imagination and think of what animals they will become with the specified body movement. Teachers may need to demonstrate to the pupils what each verb means and ask them to think of an animal which best describes the action.
