Along with your research at the Carlos Museum, this will count as a project grade which means:
· Download the questions and type your final answers on this sheet to hand in.
· Answers must be typed in Times New Roman 12 point font.
· Work INDIVIDUALLY. Do not “share” work and do not copy… your grade will be subject to a plagiarism penalty.
· Answers are expected to be in-depth… this means PUT SOME THOUGHT INTO THEM. Remember this is a PROJECT grade, we will reward those who treat it as such.
· Bring a pocket folder to class Friday for your project papers.
Essential Question: How do artifacts reflect culture? (After completing Part 1 & 2 of the project, you will be expected to be able to answer this fully in essay form as Part Three of your project.)

Click on Ancient Americas.
You will see the Table of Contents (home) page. You will see a series of three questions along with all of the pictures. Click on each of the questions (listed below) and follow the directions…
1. Who were the first Americans? Read the paragraphs and answer the question.
2. What are the ancient Americas? Read the paragraphs and at the bottom click on the timeline. Scroll over all of the artifacts and choose the one that is the most interesting to you. Explain the artifact and why you chose it as your favorite.
3. Why should I look at ancient things? Read the page and list a MINIMUM of six reasons why artifact interpretation is important.
Go back to the Table of Contents (home) page. Look over the nine “Did you know?” questions.
Click on the “Did you know” that is on the far left: Lands of the ancient Americas.
You will see a physical map of the Americas. Scroll your mouse over the map and begin by clicking on the Andes mountain range.
4. In what ways did the Inca adapt to living in the Andes?
5. Click on the Amazon rainforest. What products from the rainforest were important and why?
Click on the “Did you know” that is clockwise showing the picture of the mummy.
6. How are the Andean mummies similar to the Egyptian mummies?
7. Now click on “textiles”. What is the Pampas Cat and how did it relate to agriculture?
Click on the “Did you know” that has the first team sport.
8. Spend ten minutes investigating the different links, including the icon in the lower right hand corner “Explore the Ball Game” (it will say that it is blocking the pop-up… be sure to click “allow pop ups from this site”). Be sure to turn on your sound.
9. Explain the ball game using as much detail as possible, to someone who had never heard of it before. Be sure to include your thoughts on how the game reflected the culture.

10. In what ways were llamas used? (Remember that the fur was used also)

11. What were signs of beauty and power in the ancient Americas?
12. Under “Big Ears”…What information can you get about the culture from the gold ear spool?
13. Under “Rock and Roll”… What was a roller stamp? Does it remind you of something you’ve seen in another civilization?
14. Under “So What’s New”… What are some of the contemporary equivalents?

15. What does pre-Columbian mean?
16. How many people where living in the Americas when the Europeans first arrived?
Click on the “Did you know” that shows the jaguar sculpture.
17. Read about the jaguar as the “Lord of the American tropics”
18. Now click on “Animals of the ancient Americas”. Look at all eleven objects (remember you will be seeing these at the Carlos Museum). Create a chart like the one below and answer all of the questions that follow:
