North Carolina Standard Course of Learning
Life Science (Biology) Standards - Grades 3-5
Characteristics of Plants and Animals / 1. Give examples of how inherited characteristics may change over time as adaptations to changes in the Characteristics of Plants and Animals shape of beak or feet, placement of eyes on head, length of neck, shape of teeth, color.
Adaptations of Living Things / 2. Give examples of how changes in the environment (drought, cold) have caused some plants and animals to die or move to new locations (migration).
3. Give examples of how organisms can cause changes in their environment to ensure survival. Explain how some of these changes may affect the ecosystem.
Energy and Living Things / 4. Describe how energy derived from the sun is used by plants to produce sugars (photosynthesis) and is transferred within a food chain from producers (plants) to consumers to decomposers
Weather / 5. Differentiate between weather and climate.
Technology Standards
/ Demonstrate proficiency in the use of computers and applications as well as an understanding of concepts underlying hardware, software, and connectivity.
/ Demonstrate responsible use of technology and an understanding of ethics and safety issues in using electronic media.
/ Explain and demonstrate understanding of classroom rules regarding responsible use of computers (responsible behavior around equipment, respect for other people's work, and appropriate collaborative behavior) (2.6)
/ Write correct citations for text and images gathered from electronic sources. Understand that use of materials can be misused to distort or exaggerate information (2.14)
English Language Arts Standards
  • Students will design and create coherent media productions (audio, video, television, multimedia, Internet, and other technologies) with a clear controlling idea, adequate detail, and appropriate consideration of audience, purpose, and medium.
Continue to address earlier standards as needed.
  • Create media presentations and written reports on the same subject and compare the differences in effects of each. (Media - 27.4)
  • Use criteria to assess the effectiveness of media presentations. (Media - 27.5)
