Single Security standard for the Private letting market – Pilot Scheme.

Dear landlord – letting agent.

I am writing to all the landlords – lettings agents for the Headingley / Hyde Park / Woodhouse and Weetwood areas of Leeds (see attached map) in order to invite them onto a scheme that promotes an improved Security standard for the private rented market.

This is a Pilot scheme that has been generated by the various partnerships who have a vested interest in reducing crime and improving safety for the residents living and studying in Leeds.

This has the full support of the Leeds City Council safer Leeds Executive and will be managed by the below stakeholders.

  • Leeds City Council – Safer Leeds
  • Leeds City Council Private Sector Housing
  • West Yorkshire Police NPT team – Crime Reduction Team
  • The Universities of Leeds – Residential Property
  • UNIPOL
  • Students Union

Aims and Objectives:-

The aim of the scheme “SAFER LEEDS – SAFER HOMES” is to improve the security standard of the private sector – aligning previous schemes into one.

  1. To promote a single standard security standard for private rented sector (PRS) properties in Leeds District for HMO and Single Occupancy.
  2. To manage the PRS security scheme in partnership, accountable to Safer Leeds and stakeholders.
  3. Provide crime prevention information to landlords, agents, and tenants on how they can assist in preventing crimes taking place in their property.
  4. Improve the security of all PRS accommodation, including multi-occupancy let’s, in order to reduce crime and improve safety.
  5. Proposed roll out for the wider Leeds area at a later date.

This Pilot scheme will be launched in July 2016.

All landlords that have properties within the area will be invited to take part. There is no administration cost to join the scheme. This will be managed by the schemes members.
