A HOUSE RESOLUTION
TO COMMEND MICHAEL PETTIFORD, WARDEN OF THE FEDERAL CORRECTIONAL INSTITUTION IN BENNETTSVILLE, FOR HIS OUTSTANDING SERVICE UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS RETIREMENT AND TO WISH HIM MUCH SUCCESS AND HAPPINESS IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives note that, after thirty years of service, eight of which have been spent in South Carolina, Mr. Michael Pettiford is retiring from the position of warden of the Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Bennettsville on March 3, 2008; and
Whereas, in preparation for his career, Mr. Pettiford attended Rutledge College, majoring in business administration. In 1971, he entered the United States Army, where he received two Army Good Conduct Medals and a National Defense Service Medal prior to leaving the Army in 1978. After the completion of his military service, he joined the Veterans Administration and worked there for a brief period before beginning service with the Federal Bureau of Prisons; and
Whereas, Michael Pettiford began his career with the Bureau of Prisons in August 1978 as a correctional officer trainee at the Federal Correctional Institution in Butner, North Carolina, while there receiving promotions to senior officer, senior officer specialist, and correctional counselor. In 1988, he left FCI Butner when he was selected as a GS11 lieutenant at FCI Marianna, Florida. At Marianna, he received inhouse promotions to GS12 and GS13 unit manager; and
Whereas, from 1992 to 1996, he first served in South Carolina, where he was an associate warden at FCI Estill, followed by five years’ service as associate warden at the Federal Detention Center in Miami, Florida. Having been selected as warden of the Federal Prison Camp at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, Nevada, he remained there until being named warden at FCI Yazoo City, Mississippi, in 2002. His selection as first warden of the new FCI Bennettsville brought him back to South Carolina in 2004, where he has served since; and
Whereas, Mr. Pettiford, taking his responsibilities with the seriousness they deserve, labored diligently as associate warden at FCI Estill and as warden at FCI Bennettsville on behalf of the people of South Carolina, and the House of Representatives wishes to express its gratitude for his exemplary service to this great State. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend Michael Pettiford, warden of the Federal Correctional Institution in Bennettsville, for his outstanding service upon the occasion of his retirement and wish him much success and happiness in all his future endeavors.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. Michael Pettiford.
