Professional Experience :
Program Analyst, MD Anderson Cancer Center, 1999-present
- Consulting
Provided a one time consulting service to Ellipsis biotherapeutics Corp (Canada)
for its bioinformatics infrastructures primarily on laboratory information management
system.
- Database Management Application Development
Designed and implemented a lab information system for the TARGET project
(Oracle and VB6.0).
Conducted system analysis and developed several lab specimen management database
applications to satisfy different lab’s requirements (MS Access and VBA).
Designed and constructed a database to store high throughput genotype data for RA (Rheumatoid Arthritis) genome scan project (Implemented in SQL server 7.0).
Modified a database application for collecting Brain Tumor patient data through questionnaire survey. (VB 6.0 and MS Access)
- Other Software Development Projects
Developed a patient data transfer application to facilitate the data exchange between MD Anderson and former Genometrix Inc. (Implemented in JAVA, Oracle, and MS Access).
Developed PERL program modules to facilitate monthly data upload to Patient History Oracle Database from DB2 database.
Developed a database dictionary generator application to facilitate documenting and analyzing the data elements in the database (in JAVA)
Developed C and PERL programs that implement statistical related algorithms for genetic linkage analysis.
Developed a chromosome viewer application that render all the human chromosomes with correct banding patterns and all the associated abnormalities through parsing differential genomic hybridization data. (OpenGL, C++).
- Data Analysis
Developed an automation procedure for mutation detection through sequence chromatogram analysis. (Using GCG, BLAST, FASTA as well as FRED, PHRAP, CONSED, VBA, PERL etc.).
Performed Association study between LOH (Loss of heterozygosity) of biomarkers and
Wilms tumor suppressor gene WT1 mutations. This project was to test possible
association between LOH (Loss of heterozygosity) of biomarkers and Wilms tumor
suppressor gene WT1 mutations (SAS, S-Plus, MS Access and VBA).
- Web projects
Maintained the web site for Peutz-Jeghers study project (HTML)
Developed a PERL based counter for CGN web page.
Developed a WWW E-mail module (PHP).
Research Associate, Baylor College of Medicine, 1996-1998
- Biomedical Research, Computational Molecular Genetics
Activities involved were searching and retrieving data from public database GenBank as well as SwissProt, and PIR etc; analyzing thedata through different application software such as MacVector, DNA Star and phylogenic analysis packages; managing data conversion with different format and in different OS (Mac, PC and Unix). The results obtained through these computational approaches are directly used to guide biomedical research. Other activities include experimental design, performing experiments related to signal transduction.
Teaching and Research Assistant, University of Houston, 1992-1996
- Teaching as a teaching assistant
General Biology 1-2
Microbiology
Human Anatomy and Physiology
- Web management
Functioned as web Master and web Administrator for the Institute for Molecular Pertinacity. Activities involved were MacTCP configuration through AppleTalk network; Static VS Dynamic IP address configuration; Installation and configuration of HTTP server.
- Bio-Computing / Data Management
Activities involved were DNA/protein sequence analysis through programs such as Blast/Fasta, GCG package and Entrez. These computational approaches along with others result in a successful cloning and identification of a gene as "14-3-3" which is deposited in GenBank database ( In addition, a 14-3-3 DNA/protein sequence database was constructed and analyzed with several molecular evolutionary analysis software, which resulted in a publication (J of Mol Evol, 1996
