- THE PURPOSE OF THIS CIRCULAR
The aim of this circular is to outline the policy requirements for the recognition of Music Programmes as contained in the school policy document, namely, A Resumè of Instructional Programmes in Schools, Report 550 (2001/08) for the purpose of issuing a Senior Certificate.
The National Policy contained in Report 550 regarding the recognition of the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) Grades 6,7 and 8 Music Programmes as well as the theoretical pre-requisite (Grade 6 Theory) as equivalent to Music SG and Music HG respectively, also applies to certain post Grade 8 Music Performers examination.
- SUBJECT OFFERINGS
Learners will be allowed to offer one of Music HG/SG, Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music, or Trinity College of London Music, or UNISA Practical Music Examination as part of a six subject Senior Certificate programme. In the case of the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music, only practical and theoretical Music examinations after 17 May 2005 will be recognised for Senior Certificate purposes.
2.1.Higher Grade or Standard Grade subject equivalence will be granted for the final Senior Certificate examination, as follows, to candidates who satisfy the requirements of either the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music, Trinity College of London or UNISA Practical Music Examination, Grades 6, 7, or 8 or the Performer's Licentiate in Music, as well as the theoretical prerequisites:

2.2.A maximum of one of the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music, or Trinity College of London, or UNISA Practical Music Examination, Grades 6, 7, or 8, or a Performer's examination in Music may be offered in combination with Senior Certificate instructional offerings.

2.3.For the purpose of calculating the 720 mark aggregate required for the issuing of a Senior Certificate, the relevant Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music, or Trinity College of London, or UNISA Practical Music Examination, Grades 6, 7, or 8, or a Performer's examination in Music mark will be calculated as follows:
(a)In the case of a six instructional offering combination the Music mark will be included in the aggregate; and
(b)In the case of a seven, or seven plus instructional offering combination, the aggregate will be determined on the basis of the marks obtained for the two required languages and the four best marks for the instructional offerings for South African learners, and on the one required language and the marks for the five best instructional offerings for immigrant candidates.
2.4.No conversion or condonation will apply to the relevant music examination results.
2.5.The Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music, or Trinity College of London, or UNISA Practical Music Examination, Grades 6, 7, or 8, or the Performer's examination in Music may not be offered in combination with Music Higher Grade or Standard Grade.
2.6.Candidates offering either one of the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music, or Trinity College of London, or UNISA Practical Music Examination, Grades 6, 7, or 8, or the Performer's examination in Music and the prerequisite theoretical components, may also offer MusicSecond Instrument Standard Grade as a recognised Senior Certificate instructional offering as stipulated in this policy document.
2.7.Learners offering one of the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music, or Trinity College of London, or UNISA Practical Music Examination, Grades 6, 7, or 8, or the Performer's examination in Music as part of their Senior Certificate programme, must also offer and pass at the levels required by the examining authorities the relevant theoretical components as stipulated in paragraph l.
2.8.The theoretical prerequisite for the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music, or Trinity College of London, or UNISA Practical Music Examination, Grades 6, 7, or 8, or the Performer's examination in Music need not to be passed simultaneously with the applicable practical components (Grades 6, 7, 8 and Performer's examination in Music),but must be passed before recognition can be given to the relevant Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music, or Trinity College of London, or UNISA Practical Music Examination.
2.9.In the case of learners presenting six or more approved Senior Certificate instructional offerings in combination with one of the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music, or Trinity College of London, or UNISA Practical Music Examination, Grades 6, 7, or 8, or the Performer's examination in Music and the prerequisite theoretical components, these examinations may be offered and passed at an earlier date than the final Senior Certificate examination.

2.10.The concession stipulated in paragraph 9, is only applicable to learners who must still write the Senior Certificate examination, that is post l999 Senior Certificate candidates for an approved UNISA Practical Music Examination, the post-2002 Senior Certificate candidates for an approved Trinity College ofLondon Practical Music Examination and the post2004 Senior Certificate candidates for an approved Associated Board ofRoyal Schools ofMusic Practical Music Examination.
2.11.Learners may not offer a music programme comprising a combination ofMusic, Associated Board ofRoyal Schools ofMusic Practical Music Examination, Trinity College of London Practical Music Examination and UNISA Practical Music Examination.
The following policy requirements are only applicable on university admission:
2.12.Learners who have offered one of Music, Associated Board ofRoyal Schools ofMusic Practical Music Examination, Trinity College of London Practical Music Examination and UNISA Practical Music Examination as part of the six subject requirement for the Senior Certificate, that is one of the above and five other Senior Certificate subjects, will only obtain recognition for such Practical Music Examination if it is passed six (6) months prior to, concurrently with or six (6) months after the Senior Certificate examination.
2.13.If a candidate has met the above university admission requirement and has complied with the South African Universities' Vice Chancellors' Association's (SAUVCA) exemption requirements (vide he or she may apply for a certificate of complete exemption. Such an exemption certificate allows the admission of the holder to first university degree studies.
2.14.Where one ofthe Music subjects listed in paragraph 12 above is offered in a seven or seven plus Senior Certificate subject combination, and where the other Senior Certificate subjects qualify the holder for a matriculation endorsement, such a Music subject may be displayed on the endorsed Senior Certificate.
