Committee on Social Equity (COSE)
Spring 2016
Minutes – May 11, 2016
4:00-6:30 p.m.
Present: Carol Kagimoto, Nina Martin, Derek Otsuji, Guy Shibayama
Recorder: Brenda Kwon
Meeting called to order at 4:00 p.m.
- Review of Miss Representationscreening event on 4/13/16.
- Carol Kagimotoprovided the attendance records and evaluation forms. The event drew a total of 24 attendees: 6 faculty, 5 staff, 2 administrative, 5 students, 1 high school student, 5 “other.”
Evaluations indicated that participants valued the event and felt they gained information pertinent to the HonCC community. Requests involved more film screenings and stronger security on campus.
- The committee unanimously felt that the “Awareness Never Ends” film festival was a success and reported several post-event conversations that indicated a vital discussion about gender equity and preventing sexual violence has been created.
- As a result of the responses to the films and subsequent requests for film availability, the HonCC has now acquired copies of The Hunting Ground and The Mask You Live In.
- The committee acknowledged the support of Kimberley Gallant, Wellness Counselor, as well as that of Chancellor Erika Lacro, Derek Inafuku, and Dean Steven Auerback for their event attendance and concern for the issues raised by COSE.
- COSE Committee Charter Amendment
- Based on information provided by Brent Rubio from the Committee on Committees, requests for membership to COSE exceed what is allowed in the charter. A discrepancy also exists between the charter committee make up and the information presented on the web.
- To address the discrepancy and accommodate and expand COSE participation, the committee voted unanimously to amend the committee representation as follows:
1 student
2 staff
1 administrative
6 faculty
*Should other positions remain open, they may be filled with
additional faculty members
Term limits will need to be expanded, but the discussion will be tabled until next year as FSEC will need to make a formal review and approval of changes.
- Future Planning
- Guy Shibayama suggested presenting issues around economic equality and unions, and Nina Martin added the subject of equity of pay for women. Both Derek Otsuji and Carol Kagimoto expressed support of the issue. Brenda Kwon suggested two possible films: The Hand That Feeds, which tells the story of the success formation of a union by undocumented workers in New York; and Food Chains, about the mobilizing of migrant workers to protest low wages and worker abuse. Brenda will send trailers for both films to the rest of the committee.
Meeting adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
