Minutes of the WPR3 kickoff meeting in Istanbul
Place: ISIK University, Istanbul, Turkey
Date and Time: 6 September 2004 9:00-18:00
Persons present at the meeting: Thomas Eriksson (Chalmers), Siddik Yarman (ISIK), Ali Kilinc (ISIK), Ebru Cimen (ISIK), Haci Pinarbasi (ISIK), Metin Sengul (ISIK), Giovanni Ghione (POLITO), Erik Öjefors (UU), Abdullah Atalar (Bilkent), Tarık Reyhan (Bilkent), Mustafa Durukal (Bilkent), Hakan Arslan (Bilkent)
- Abdullah opened the meeting at 9:00.
- Meeting agenda is agreed upon. (See slides 3 and 4 of wpr3_istanbul.ppt)
- Abdullah summarized the activities of the WPR3.(See slides 5 to 10 of wpr3_istanbul.ppt)
- Abdullah described the performance measures of the NEWCOM in terms of integration. (See slides12 to 14 in wpr3_istanbul.ppt). A discussion on student exchanges took place. POLITO, Chalmers, UU and ISIK declared their willingness to accept students on a short time (e.g. 1 week) basis.
- Abdullah gave information on the present status of deliverable DR1 whose deadline is delayed by 1.5 months. Missing parts of the report are discussed.
- Workshop part of the meeting started at about 10:30 and finished at about 16:30.
- Abdullah introduced the motivation behind research on nonlinearities of power amplifiers (See slides 19 through 27 of wpr3_istanbul.ppt)
- Giovanni Ghione of POLITO made a 100 minute presentation on“Nonlinearity characterization and modeling” (See newcom-ghione-6-9-04.ppt)
- Lunch break for about 70 minutes
- Thomas Eriksson of Chalmers University of Technology made a presentation on the library it++ (about 40 minutes) (See it++.ppt)
- Tea/coffee break
- Erik Öjefors of Uppsala University made a presentation on “Micromachined Antennas for integration with silicon based active devices”(About 40 minutes) (See uu-wpr3-sept-04.ppt)
- Siddik Yarman of ISIK presented his work on “Impedance matching and modeling using real frequency techniques” (About 70 minutes) (See mw-isik.ppt)
- Siddik Yarman of ISIK said that he can prepare a one-week course on “Real frequency techniques” and make it available to the students of the NEWCOM partners. Since sending students on a semester basis to another institution is problematic, this offer satisfies the needs. Siddik will prepare a syllabus of the short course and provide it to the partners before 14thof September. Dates of the course are provisionally set in the last week of November 2004. But exact dates will be discussed among partners, once the participants of the short course are determined.
- A discussion on possible research areas for different clusters took place. As a result of this discussion following research plan is determined:
- Clusters “Nonlinearity of PA’s” and “Phase Noise”:
- Learn to use it++
- Develop it++ models of nonlinear amplifiers and phase noise of oscillators. Information for nonlinearity models will be provided by Giovanni.
- A full communication system including a transmitter and a receiver will be modeled using it++. The system will include nonlinear amplifiers and oscillators with phase noise.
- Effects of the following on the system performance will be determined:
- Nonlinearities
- Phase noise
- Adjacent channel interference
- Cluster “Antennas”
- Measurement results for an antenna will be provided by UU group to ISIK
- ISIK group will generate a simple circuit model for the antenna using their tools of real frequency techniques
- ISIK group will also generate a matching network for the given antenna using their real frequency tools
- The matching networks generated will be implemented and measured experimentally
- “RFIC” cluster (UoP, TUI, UU) should come up with a research plan in about two weeks. It may require a meeting in Sweden to determine this plan.
- The next meeting is to be held in Italy (in Pisa or Torino) next year 1.5 months before the deadline of the next deliverable.
- Meeting adjourned with all points covered at 18:00.
(A dinner is organized in a restaurant overlooking Bosphorus same evening).
