JOB TITLE:Lead Camp InstructorSCHEDULE:M-F 40 hours

JOB TYPE:Seasonal Full-Time PAY RANGE:$12 per Hour

FLSA STATUS:Non Exempt REPORTS TO:Summer Camp Director

Position Summary:

Lead Camp Instructors are the primary caregiver of each camper. Under the direction of the Summer Camp Director,the LCI will provide direct supervision of a group of children in a seasonal day camp. Under the direction of the Summer Camp Director, LCI will facilitate and implement curriculum and activitiesfor an assigned age group with the ability to modify curricula to accommodate all learning levels. In addition, LCI will promote safe and healthy behavior in order to provide an active learning environment and provide a quality experience to children and parents focused on YMCA core values: honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring. The LCI will also assist the Summer Camp Director with summer special events and the promotion of Y Summer Camp.

Essential Functions:

  1. Directs and supervises children, the classroom, and the organization of campers in their age group within activities and throughout the camp in order to meet the intended camper outcomes.
  2. Plans and implements age-appropriate curriculum in the areas of math and literacy.
  3. Serves as a role model to camp-goers and builds relationships with youth and families that will deepen their connection to the Y.
  4. Leads and participates in all camp activities and special events.
  5. Implements I-ready software curriculum, integrating it into the classroom whenever possible.
  6. Acts as a positive role model to campers and staff in attitude and behavior.
  7. Maintains high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers and staff.
  8. Works as a team with fellow camp staff.
  9. Controls access to Summer Camp facility.
  10. Maintains program space and equipment.
  11. Maintains required program records.
  12. Provides parents with accurate camp information.
  13. Resolves camper and parent concerns and inform Summer Camp Director of unusual situations or unresolved issues.
  14. Attends and participates in family nights, program activities, staff meetings and staff training.
  15. Maintains a basic knowledge of all YMCA programs, departments, and membership information.
  16. Consistently demonstrate positive interaction and discipline with all children.
  17. Express clear expectations and hold children accountable to adhering to them.
  18. Help children develop a positive self-esteem and sense of self-worth.
  19. Consistently demonstrate and reinforce the values of caring, respect, honesty, and responsibility.

Job Qualifications:

  1. Passion for working with youth and helping youth develop.
  2. College degree or currently pursuing college degree (emphasis on education preferred).
  3. At least 18 years of age.
  4. Previous experience working with children (in a developmental setting preferred).
  5. Previous experience with diverse populations preferred.

Physical Demands:

  1. Ability to Lift 50 pounds using proper technique.
  2. Ability to plan, lead, and participate in activities.
  3. Ability to swim 50 yards preferred.
  4. Currently have excellent health and be free of communicable diseases.

Trainings/Certifications Required:

  1. CPR, First Aid, AED certifications. (available through the Y)
  2. Redwoods safety trainings including Child Sexual Abuse Prevention completed prior to summer camp start date. (provided after being hired)
  3. Mandatory Reporter training. (available through the Y)
