MEMBERS BULLETIN, MAY 2015
It is with sadness that I write this Bulletin to you, for, as most of you will already know,Lt Col Colin Grafton died suddenly on 10th November 2014. The Athelings Association, which he founded shortly after he had been Athelings Commandant in 1997, was very much his idea. Colin set up the framework and, with his wife Susan, ran the BBQ, which has been such an agreeable source of contact for ex-Athelings each year. With the help of Susan, and support from Derby Lodge, the Associationhas grown steadily to become the organisation it is today, currently in contact with over 500 former Athelings. For me it is therefore a considerable privilege to be writing this Bulletin, very much in Colin’s shadow.
Lt Col Rex Goddard and I are the two surviving members of the Association’s Committee. We have, in consultation with other CCRS members, decided that, to honour Colin’s memory, the Association’s annual match, based on the Daily Telegraph, should be renamed The Colin Grafton Match. I am delighted to say that Susan Grafton has accepted our invitation to come up to the BBQ this year to give away the prizes for the Match. These are small engraved shields which are awarded to the top scorer in each of X, A, O and T.
At the AGM of the Association, immediately following the BBQ, members present will be asked to ratify the new officers of the Association. The proposed organisation is:

Hon. Organiser – Maj James Postle
A very warm welcome to all new members of the Association, and in particular the 2014 Athelings. We hope that the Association will enable you to keep in contact with not only your own former team members but all the community of ex-Athelings going back over the last 60 years. However, there are still over 400 former Athelings out there somewhere whom we have been unable to trace so far. If you meet or know any of them please ask them to get in touch.
Athelings Summer Functions
The details of this year’s functions, to be held on Saturday 11th July, are:
- The Barbecue will be held at Derby Lodge, starting at 7.30. With the kind agreement of this year's Commandant our Chefs will be the 2015 Athelings. For the 16th year we are keeping the price of tickets at £5 per head for members and their guests.
Tickets can be booked using the attached form, and will be available for collection from the Derby Lodge bar on the day. As always, early booking and payment would be appreciated so that we know how many to cater for.
The Colin GraftonMatch, formerly the Athelings Association Match,will be on the Saturday afternoon, concurrent with the Daily Telegraph. Claim Cards should be collected from Derby Lodge before the match and returned to the box on the front wall as soon as possible afterwards. The prize-giving will take place that evening during the AGM.
- The (very brief) AGM will be held during the evening, along with the prize-giving. Anyone wishing to place items on the AGM agenda should please let me know in advance through CCRS.
2015 Athelings
This year the team will be led by Col Rob Hughes (Gwent & Powys ACF)), with FS Helen Southall (126 (City of Derby) Sqn ATC as Adjutant and Capt Alwyn McLean (AR) as Armourer. As always, we wish them every success, both in Canada and in the Rex Goddard 'Home' leg before departure.
The 2015 team list is enclosed - please look out for their shoulder-flashes around the Common this summer and give them your congratulations.
