Background
Headway Milton Keynes (“Headway”) is a charity supporting individuals, carers and families affected by brain injury. We cater for service users aged 18 and over, offering a range of services which promote rehabilitation and enablement. We support service users to build on their existing skills (cognitive, physical, social and emotional) and in turn increase their physical, emotional and social wellbeing. Attending our service also provides the opportunity for social interaction and to regain confidence, as well as developing practical life skills in a supportive environment.
We recognise that each person is different and no two injuries are the same. After an initial introduction and assessment, service users choose from a selection of activities to create a tailored programme to suite individual needs and choices. We offer a range of services from sessions to support the development of cognitive skills, practical sessions to increase participation in meaningful activities and clinical therapies (physiotherapy, occupational therapy and counselling psychology).

Job Summary
- Provide occupational therapy assessment and intervention to survivors of acquired brain injury (ABI)who have been referred to Headway Milton Keynes (“Headway”).
- To provide one-to-one and group interventions, both at our centre and in a variety of domestic and public settings.
- To focus primarily on participation in activities of daily living, vocational rehabilitation and social integration.
Main Duties
- To carry out familiar full and comprehensive Occupational Therapy assessments of individuals with neurological presentations as an autonomous practitioner.
- To negotiate goal-directed intervention with individuals and / or carers to establish a realistic person-centred treatment programme, and promote an individual’s choice. This can be goals both within our setting and in the wider community.
- To formulate and deliver a person-centred individual treatment programme based on a sound knowledge of evidence based practice and invention options using clinical assessment and reasoning skills.
- To independently evaluate progress using recognised and validated outcome measures to improve client support, adapting as necessary.
- To run a range of therapeutic groups offered at Headway and ensure they continue to meet the needs of service users.
- To develop your skills and opportunities leading to the development and improvement of the service.
- To develop a good knowledge of acquired brain injury, including stroke and head injury, and application to daily living skills including understanding the clinical reasoning of the use of equipment, technology and adaptations in the physical and social environment to maximise independence.
- To effectively prioritise and manage a mixed caseload of individual sessions, group work and supervision both in Headway and in the community.
- To maintain accurate and up to date documentation for entire caseload.
- To communicate effectively and empathetically with individuals with speech, cognitive and behavioural difficulties including communicating information which may be of a complex and sensitive nature.
- To employ appropriate skills to motivate an individual to achieve their goals.
- To carry out intervention with people with complex and challenging behaviour, including lone working.
- To develop a good knowledge and application of risk assessment both within our service and during home visits.
- To communicate effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team and with inter-agencies to ensure collaborative working and the delivery of a co-ordinated service, in order to promote an individual’s successful (re) engagement in activities of daily living, vocational rehabilitation and leisure in the community.
- To support, advise and provide education for clients and/or carers as appropriate.
- To work closely with all members of the team and participate in team meetings, de-briefs and in-service training.
Other Duties
- Contribute to and participate in effective risk assessment to enable and support participation in a range of activities at Headway’s day service and in the community.
- To maintain complete confidentiality of all material and information to which you have access to.
- Be responsible for selecting and requesting appropriate resources when necessary.
- Be accountable for own professional action whilst recognising professional boundaries and seeking advice from colleagues / professional body, where appropriate.
- Engage in clinical supervision and Headway Milton Keynes appraisal system; setting and completing objectives.
- Participate in member reviews with the multi-disciplinary team.
- Any other duties that may reasonably be required.
