The Landscape Institute Travel Award 2014

The Landscape Institute Travel Award is awarded from a fund set up in memory of David Ashmore, Adrian Brunswick and Michael Norton, three landscape architects who were tragically killed in an air crash at Biggin Hill on 13 January 1989. A legacy was added to the fund on the death of Mary Mitchell in December 1988.

The fund provides for an annual award for which student members of the Institute may apply.The aim is to provide applicants with an opportunity to travel which might not otherwise be open to them. Travel should be extracurricular, focusing on a specific topic of interest. It can be in the form of a study-specific trip, or extension of existing travel arrangements for the purpose of study.

In 2014 the amount offered for the award is to a maximum of £750. The closing date for applications will be Monday 30 April 2014. Applications will be reviewed by a panel convened by the LI’s Education and Membership Committee and the winning applicant will be notified by 31 May

Making your application

  1. To be eligible to apply for the award you must be a current student member of the LI on the closing date of 30 April 2014.
  2. Entries must be submitted on the enclosed application form, and received at LI HQ, Charles Darwin House, by 5 pm on 30 April 2014. Applications can be sent by post, or scanned and attached to an email to the address given below. Incomplete applications will not be accepted.
  3. The purpose of the award is to offer student members an opportunity for travel and study, focusing on a specific topic of interest. It is not intended to fund travel which you would normally undertake in connection with your university studies, such as university organised field trips, or to undertake study at a foreign university.
  4. The judging panel will be looking for proposals which are original, well researched and achievable and make good use of the grant award.
  5. All proposed travel must be complete by the end of 2014.
  6. The winner will be advised of the award and the amount to be offered on or before 31 May. The decision of the awards panel will be final.
  7. Monies will be paid to the winner within 28 days on their provision of evidence of booking.
  8. We regret that monies cannot be paid in advance, nor can the LI make bookings or travel reservations on behalf of the winner.
  9. Those in receipt of an award must notify the LI if their travel plans are cancelled or are subject to substantial alteration. You will be required to return any monies paid to you if your travel is cancelled, and so you should ensure that you have appropriate travel insurance.
  10. As a condition of entry, the winner must agree to be interviewed about their trip in Landscape Online.
