What is it?
The primary purpose of United Way of Harrison County’s Live United Regatta Cardboard Boat Race is to have fun while raising awareness of our fundraising efforts and community partnerships with United Way funded agencies. Family fun, community support and creativity are the key words for this event.
Boats made entirely of cardboard will race across Maple Lake, Bridgeport, WV. Boats will be timed and compete for awards against boats in their division as well as the overall fastest boat award.
Race Day Schedule
Check-in: Noon
Press Briefing/People’s Choice Awards Judging: 1:00 p.m.
Captain/Crew Safety Briefing: 1:15 p.m.
First Race: 1:30 p.m.
Awards & Trophies
Awarded in four divisions:
· Junior – Ages 12 – 17
· Family – (no minimum age as long as a parent is present in the boat)
· Adult – Ages 18 & over
· Business
· Non-Profit
First, Second and Third Place awards will be given in each division for the fastest finishing time. A cardboard boat must have been raced the entire length of the course to qualify as a “finisher.” Swimming crewmembers pushing a boat (or some portion of it) through the course is not considered “racing.” The boat (or some portion of it) must be maneuvered and propelled by at least one paddling crewmember.
Special awards will be given for the following: Best in Race Award (fastest team to cross finish line), Team Spirit Award (i.e.: costumes, props, special effects, working the crowd, etc.), People’s Choice Award (awarded to the boat the receives the most “votes” cast by spectators prior to first race – “vote” tickets can be purchased for $1), The Wonder That Went Down Under Award (most spectacular sinking).
HOW TO BUILD YOUR BOAT
Design Regulations:
· Less than 6 feet wide – Here more is not better.
· Where the crew sits cannot be enclosed. The boat crew must be able to get in and out of the boat easily! Oars and paddles can be made of anything and attached to the cardboard hull as long as it doesn't add to the strength or buoyancy of the boat.
· Decorations and props that are not part of the boat's hull or structure are allowed as long as they in no way affect the strength or the buoyancy of the boat.
· Raft style designs are allowed. Think Huck Finn.
· If there is any doubt about the construction, the judges reserve the right to use a probe, such as an ice pick, to test and verify that only cardboard has been used.
· Cardboard boat designers and builders are encouraged to use "fair" designs and building materials. Please contact the United Way office if you have any questions.
· Cost of Boat – Spend as much as you want. The United Way of Harrison County will direct you to a cardboard supplier, if needed. The rest is up to you.
Materials:
· The ENTIRE boat must be built of cardboard, duct tape and one-part polyurethane.
· The cardboard may be as thick as you want, but may not be glued or attached to wood, plastic, fiberglass, etc. Additional cardboard can be found at recycling centers, appliance stores, department stores, discount clubs, electronic stores. You must only use corrugated cardboard from these types of boxes.
· Cardboard carpet tubes can be used.
· Sono-Tubes or any other type of pre-treated or coated cardboard that has been processed in such a way as to make the cardboard waterproof may not be used.
· Metal (or plastic) staples, clamps, nails, screws, etc. – are not allowed. These are dangerous to the crew and others and the Harrison County environment.
· Wood or Styrofoam cannot be used. The buoyancy from these materials is unnecessary and defeats the whole purpose.
· No caulking compounds such as silicon, tar, wax or any similar waterproofing material is allowed.
· Boats cannot be wrapped with plastic, tape, Fiberglass or any similar product.
· Duct tape, masking tape, or adhesives such as 'liquid nails' can be used to connect cardboard to cardboard and can be used to reinforce all seams and stress points.
· If you don't want your boat to sink, waterproof the entire boat with any paint-able, one-part substance like Varnish or Polyurethane.
Research:
· Google “cardboard boat designs”, “cardboard boat plans”, etc.
· YouTube search “cardboard boat race”
· Visit the United Way of Harrison County website for design tips and a helpful PowerPoint presentation
· Consult your favorite engineer, architect or physics teacher
· Use your imagination
Race Rules & Procedures:
EVERY RACE PARTICIPANT AND CREW MEMBER MUST WEAR A PROPERLY FITTED PERSONAL FLOATATION DEVICE (PFD) WHILE IN OR ON THE WATER. Please provide your own PFDs.
· PFDs can be purchased locally at Target, Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods or at many online retailers
The minimum age of any race participant is 10 years old. No one under age 18 is allowed to participate unless his/her parents or legal guardians are present and have signed a waiver. (Date of birth on the day of the race determines age.) The oldest paddling crew member will determine which division the boat is entered. A parent may ride in Junior Division boats as a non-paddling crew member.
All crew members MUST sign a Participant Waiver/Hold Harmless Agreement on race day. Boats will not be allowed to race without a signed agreement from each race participant.
ü Please check in at the registration table by 12:00 p.m.
ü Unload your boat in the display area. After unloading, please move your vehicle to the parking lot.
ü The entire crew should proceed to the registration table to be assigned a boat number and race heat. Participant Waiver/Hold Harmless Agreement should be signed at this time. If an entrant is under the age of 18, a parent/guardian must accompany them.
ü Set up your boat display. Set out your People’s Choice Jug so everyone has a chance to “vote” for your boat.
ü After the race, the boat crews must remove all cardboard, decorations and other materials from the water and the grounds. Volunteers will be on hand to help. You can take your boat home with you or dispose of it in on-site recycling bins.
Failure to abide by any design or race rule or the direction of a race official shall be cause for disqualification. The Judges’ decision shall be final.
