Museum & Gallery Services Queensland has operated the M&GSQ Standards Program for Queensland museums and galleries in a successful partnership with Museums & Galleries NSW Standards Program since 2005.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

  • Open to participants in M&GSQ Standards Program 2005-2011.
  • The organisation must be a member of Museums Australia. (Individual memberships will not automatically meet this eligibility criteria without case by case negotiation with Museums Australia Qld)
  • The organisation must be not for profit.
  • The organisation must have a forward plan (an action plan for the future developed from the Standards Program is essential and an additional strategic or business plan is desirable).
  • The organisation must make a contribution to the initiative (this may be in-kind eg volunteer labour. Advice on how to cost volunteer labour will be provided by M&GSQ in the preparation of your grant).

SELECTION CRITERIA

The selection process takes into consideration:

  • Whether the project satisfies best gallery/museum practice.
  • How the project fits with the organisation’s forward plan.
  • The financial situation of the applying organisation.
  • The likelihood of availability of alternative sources of funds for the project.
  • The capacity of the organisation to manage the project.
  • The benefits of the project to the organisation.

What M&GSQ Standards Program Grants Will Fund:

May be used to assist public museums and galleries to undertake strategic projects or new initiativesthat build on outcomes from M&GSQ’s Standards Program. These might include but are not limited to:

  • Collection assessments - working with a consultant to identify the themes and significance of the whole collection or parts of a collection
  • Museum interpretation - working with a consultant to develop an interpretation plan
  • Museum planning - working with a consultant to develop an updated strategic plan
  • Preservation needs assessment and conservation - working with a consultant to undertake a preservation needs assessment on the museum’s collection and/or to implement recommendations arising from the preservation needs assessment
  • Education and public programs - working with a consultant to develop interpretive programs for target audiences
  • Exhibition and display development - working with a consultant to develop interpretive displays to tell the museum’s significant stories.

What M&GSQ Standards Program Grants Will Not Fund:

  • Office equipment including desks, chairs, computers or printers
  • Capital Works
  • Relocating Buildings

The organisation’s level of resources will be taken into account by the assessment panel in prioritising funding outcomes. The organisation’s previous efforts to seek grant or philanthropic funding for the project will be viewed favourably.

AMOUNT AVAILABLE

A maximum of $5,000* may be awarded to an applicant. There is one round offered annually.

*GST exclusive. GST registered organisations will receive the approved grant plus GST.

APPLICATION PROCESS

Applicants must contact M&GSQ to discuss their project. Staff will assist with developing the project, sourcing consultants, preparing the budget and writing the grant application.

ASSESSMENT PROCESS

Once your application has been checked for eligibility, it will be assessed by a minimum of three representatives including at least:

  • One M&GSQ Standards Program staff
  • One M&GSQ Standards Program reviewer
  • One member of the Museums Australia Qld committee.

The decision of the panel will be final. M&GSQ will notify applicants of their outcome by letter within four weeks of the closing date.

GRANT ACQUITTAL

Successful applicants will be required to submit a brief report within six weeks of the project’s acquittal. The acquittal report proforma will be provided to successful applicants by M&GSQ. It should include a financial report detailing the expenses covered by the grant, and a report (1–2 pages) written by the applicant that outlines their project and describes the benefits of the initiative to the organisation.

Photographs and media clippings should be included in the acquittal report where available. M&GSQ may use any of the acquittal material to promote the Standards Program and the devolved funding program.

Applicants may be required to disseminate what they have learned from the project at events and/or in publications. For example, they may be invited to speak about their project at a sector seminar and/or to contribute to a blog on development opportunities.

It is a condition of the funding that the Grant Program must be acknowledged on any printed or marketing material associated with the program. Instructions for this acknowledgement will be provided to you if your grant is successful.
