School &Teacher’s Guide for Lesson Planning
- The objective of the contest is to create awareness in the ever important task of disaster risk reduction within our youth. Incorporating the theme and the contest into anyone of various areas of the curriculum such as social studies, science or art classes can be highly effective in meeting that goal while incorporating a creative hands-on outlet for understanding.
- The Tool Kit CD contains materials that can be used to introduce the theme. In the event the CD is not available, the Tool Kit and all contest materials can also be found through the following link: Adjustments may be made to the promotional brochure and poster allowing for a more personalized event for your school or community. (See Use of Materials under Art Contest Tab)
- Use of promotional posters, gamesand the video found in the Tool Kit are strongly encouraged. The ToolKit is made up of twoCD’s:
- 1st CD contains informative documents highlighting organizations supporting the Disaster Risk Reduction Campaign and Art Contest, materials specific to the Art Contest, Children’s Rights campaign document, and information regarding the three pillars of the campaign. The Art contest Materials and documents ideal for lesson planning are also included.
- 2nd CD contains videos ideal for lesson planning and classroom instruction on the theme. The videos are entitled: Lessons Save Lives, The Power of Knowledge and a video from UNICEF on the same theme. Additional materials ideal for lesson planning follow.
- Additionally, other materials found in the Tool Kit can be used for lesson planning and directing creativity. Some of those documents ideal for lesson planning include:

- Once the contest is in place an internal judging panel should select nine (9) finalists art work to be forwarded to the address below for participation in the final judging. Suggestions for the judging process:
- Create a panel of 4-6 judges.
- Lay all entries flat on a table (with artist’s information on back)
- Assign a basic number to each entry
- Provide a basic scoring sheet to each judge using the judging criteria in the contest rules.
- Select 9 finalists to be forwarded to the address below for entry into the final judging.

- Promotional Contests can be held with a small group or classroom of children by introducing and discussing the theme, then having children interpret their understanding through artwork. After some time to complete the artwork, each peace could be taped to a wall. Children can then vote with small stickers for their three favorites that can be forwarded to the above address for entry in the regional contest. The artwork that are not selected can be displayed in a prominent location in your school until October 10, 2007, International Day for Disaster Reduction Please remember that each piece of artwork must be properly labeled on the back with the children’s contact information. Guide for Promotional Art Contest
- The objective of the contest is to create awareness in the ever important task of disaster risk reduction within our youth. Incorporating the theme and the art contest into any one of various areas of the curriculum such as social studies, science or art classes can be highly effective in meeting that goal while incorporating a creative hands-on outlet for understanding.
Promotional visits to schools are strongly encouraged and appreciated. Visits can include a short dialog with school officials to share resources available on theme that can helpful in identifying areas of the school that can be adjusted to created a safe environment. Then, a short presentation to a classroom of children with a video and thematic dialog can be made and finally concluding with the children creating artwork that can be entered in the regional contest. To simplify the planning for such an event a step by step process has been created.

- Coordinate with school officials to organize a date when one classroom of children can be made available for the presentation. They will need to have art supplies available for the final art contest portion
- Request the availability of a TV and DVD player to play the Lessons Save Lives. If you do not have the DVD the video is available at the following link: . A DVD can be requested by emailing: In any case, a verbal presentation can be made building awareness utilizing the information in the
Lets Learn to Prevent Disasters magazine:
- The day of the Contest:
- Introduce the theme through the use of the video, game or verbal presentation whiled creating a dialog. (20 min)
- Divide the participants into groups to begin working on artwork to reflect their understanding of the theme and discussion. Before the children begin to draw ask them to write their contact information on the back as listed in the contest rules:
- Title
- School Name
- First and Last name of Participant
- Grade
- AGE
- Address
- Email Address
- School or Teacher contact phone number.
- Supervise and document art time by taking photos if possible. (30 minutes).
- Following the completion of the art time, tape all the art work on the wall. Distribute three stickers to each child who will then vote for their three favorite pieces by placing a sticker under the pieces they are voting for. (15 minutes).
- The three pieces with the most votes can be forwarded to the following address for participation in the regional art contest.
