After who is “Carolina” named? King Charles II
In what year did the Carolina’s split? Why? In 1729, the two split because their economies and interests had become so different.
How did the lower house of early NC get their jobs? What powers did they have? These members were elected and had the powers of the purse to pay the salaries of the governor and other officials.
Event toward Independence / Year of event / Description of event1. Provincial Congress / August 25, 1774 / 71 Delegates met in Wilmington when the colonial government refused to call a meeting. They elected representatives to the Continental Congress
2. Edenton Tea Party / October, 1774 / A group of NC women burned their British tea and issued a protest about British policies.
3.Meclenburg Resolves
(p. 782) / May 20, 1775 / Citizens of Mecklenburg County met in Charlotte and decided that all British offices were vacant and could only be filled by the Provincial Congress. Declared independence
4. The Halifax Resolves
(p. 783) / April 12, 1776 / The 4th Provincial Congress declared NC’s independence from Great Britain. The first colony to do so.
5. The Declaration of Independence / July 4, 1776 / William Hooper, Joseph Hewes, and John Penn signed the DOI as representatives of the NC delegation.
How did NC help shape the Constitution? We sent Delegates Richard Dobbs Spaight, William Blount, and Hugh Williamson to the Convention. NC opposed the Constitution at the Hillsborough Convention in 1788 because it did not contain a BOR. We Congress passed the BOR, NC ratified the Constitution at the Fayetteville Convention in 1789.
