NGO Council Elections
If your organisation is a registered charity and receives funding from the Ministry of Health and/or a DHB, your organisation is eligible for FREE membership of the NGO Health and Disability Network.
The Network runs events and undertakes projects that are relevant to New Zealand health and disability providers like you.
The NGO Health & Disability Network Annual Report 2013-14 is attached to this message to help you gain a better understanding of what the NGO Council does to represent NGO sector views. This report gives a picture of what has been achieved this past year and the type of activities NGO Network members are involved in.

Once this is done, you will be able to nominate candidates and/or vote for representatives on the NGO Council in October.
The NGO Health & Disability Council engages regularly with the Ministry of Health and can raise issues of importance to Network members like you. Your organisation can significantly influence the NGO Health & Disability Network’s activities, if you nominate a leader from your non-profit to join the NGO Council.
Membership is completely free and is a great way to stay better informed about Ministry of Health actions of relevance to the non-profit sector. Once you’ve confirmed your membership categories, you can make a nomination if you choose
This year, nominees can stand for one of the following positions on the 13 member NGO Council:
Disability Support Services - TWO vacancies for a 2 year term
Māori Health - TWO vacancies for a 2 year term
Public Health - TWO vacancies for a 2 year term
Personal Health - ONE vacancy for a 2 year term
Pacific Health - ONE vacancy for a 2 year term
Some current Council reps, are not re-standing this year so new ideas and energy are needed to continue progress on NGO sector issues and implementation of the Work Plan.
By completing the Nomination Form, your NGO endorses the leader’s potential contribution and you demonstrate your support for their ongoing commitment to the NGO Council, which meets every two months. (See the Council Member Guidelines for more information on the responsibilities and expectations.)
NGO election registrations and nominations for candidates will be closed off at 6pm on Tuesday 7 October 2014.
The list of eligible NGOs, and those candidates nominated for the Council, will then be published on the NGO website the following week. Should elections be required (i.e: if there are more nominations than vacancies), voting will take place between 13-31 October 2014, and we will send eligible NGOs voting details at this time.
Please send your nominations in before 6pm on Tuesday 7 October 2014.
Note: There are no vacancies in the Mental Health and Addictions category this year as both roles were filled for two year terms in 2013. (You can connect with your representatives via the website.)

Stoptober
Stoptober is a 31-day quit smoking challenge designed to help thousands of kiwis kick the smoking habit for good. Already successful in the UK, it’s the first time Stoptober has been held in New Zealand and begins on 1 October.
To help people quit smoking habit, there are free daily texts, emails, a free mobile app plus social media, radio, television and fun events.
Stoptober is being funded under the Ministry of Health’s Pathway to Smokefree New Zealand 2025 Innovation Fund and run by Action on Smoking and Health (ASH).

In-between travel settlement
An Agreement which establishes national payments for travel time and travel cost for home and community support workers has been negotiated. The Crown began negotiations with unions, employers and funding agencies in the home and community support sector to find a solution to the issue of travel between clients in 2014.
As well as payment for in-between travel the agreement includes a comprehensive review of the sector and a planned transition to a ‘regularised’ workforce. —Read more

Pacific Community Innovations Fund
There is now one-off funding available to support Pacific community groups to create and put into action their own ideas to improve awareness and help to reduce rheumatic fever. Applications are due 3 October 2014. —Read more

State Services Commission updates
Entries open for HINZ Nexus Booth 2014
Entries are now open for Nexus Booth 2014 at the Health Informatics New Zealand (HINZ) conference in Auckland on 11-12 November. NGOs, DHBs and PHOs are invited to share an IT innovation they have developed to improve patient care or clinicians’ access to technology at the point of care.
Innovations must:
• be already in use
• offer clinical benefits
• be cost-effective
• be suitable for replication by other organisations.
Three to five innovations will be showcased at the Nexus Booth and at plenary sessions at the conference. More information is available at the National Health IT Board website: www.ithealthboard.health.nz

Statistics NZ – update of NFP satellite report announced
Statistics New Zealand is to update its official measure of the not-for-profit sector, the 2004 Non-profit Institutions Satellite Account, which was released before the Charities Register was launched and populated.
That report, now a decade old, found there were 97,000 not-for-profit organisations, including charities, in New Zealand contributing $6.95 billion or 4.9% to the country’s Gross Domestic Product.
More recent data, drawn from registered charities’ most recent annual returns, shows that the charitable sector had a total income of $16.8 billion, and expenditure of more than $10.5 billion.
Statistics NZ estimates that the project will take around 18 months. Once updated, the report will give a more accurate picture of the size, structure and economic contribution of non-profit institutions.
Update Seminars for Registered Charities
The External Reporting Board (XRB) in conjunction with DIA Charities Services is holding seminars to update registered charities on the new accounting requirements that become mandatory in 2015.
The free, two-hour seminars are aimed at registered charities with annual operating expenditure less than $2 million. These charities will be able to report using Simple Format Reporting standards.
The seminars will be run throughout the country in October 2014 and will include:
· The new legislative requirements for registered charities to follow XRB Accounting Standards from 1 April 2015
· An overview of the Simple Format Reporting Standards
· How the final standards differ from the proposed standards as a result of consultation with the sector during 2013 (which was the focus of the last seminar series)
· What charities need to do now to get ready to apply the Simple Format Reporting Standards next year, and
· Future opportunities to learn more about the standards and how to apply them.

#GivingTuesday comes to New Zealand
Volunteering NZ has partnered with others for #GivingTuesday this year, an international fundraising event encouraging people to give their time, money or voice on the first Tuesday in December. #GivingTuesday is a call to action campaign dedicated to creating a national day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season. Charities, families, community centers, students and businesses are all welcome to come together for this day of giving.

About Dementia
About Dementia is a new campaign funded by the Ministry of Health and Pub Charity, and implemented by Alzheimers NZ. The campaign aims to increase awareness and understanding of dementia so that people affected by dementia can get the help and support that they need.
