Incrementing and Decrementing on the Decade, by Tens:
Ø  Place out 3 bundles of ten (popsicle sticks work great). How many sticks are there? Add another bundle, now how many? Continue to 10 bundles
Ø  Do the same thing above going backwards.
Ø  Display and then screen 3 bundles. How many sticks are under the screen? Place another bundle under, now how many? Continue to ten bundles. Ask, how many sticks? How many bundles?
Ø  Do the same thing above going backwards.
Incrementing and Decrementing off the Decade, by Tens:
Ø  Place out 3 bundles of ten and 2 sticks. How many sticks are there? Add another bundle, now how many? Continue to 10 bundles and 2 sticks.
Ø  Do the same thing above going backwards, removing a bundle at a time.
Ø  Display and then screen 3 bundles. How many sticks are under the screen? Place another bundle under, now how many? Continue to ten bundles. Ask, how many sticks? How many bundles?
Ø  Do the same thing above going backwards.
Ø  Repeat with other amounts…ie 2 bundles and 4 ones to 10 bundles and 4 ones, then backwards.
Incrementing by Tens and Ones:
Ø  Display and screen 4 bundles of ten. How many sticks are under the screen? Place 2 bundles and 1 stick beside the screen. How many sticks now?
Ø  Put the two bundles and 1 stick under the screen and place out 1 bundle and 3 sticks. How many sticks now? Check to see if you are correct.
Ø  Display and then screen 1 bundle and 4 sticks. How many sticks are there under the screen?
Ø  Place 2 bundles beside the screen. How many sticks now? Put the 2 bundles under the screen and place out 1 bundle and 3 sticks. How many sticks now? Check to see if you are correct.
Ø  Place the 1 bundle and 3 sticks under the screen and place out 2 bundles and 1 stick. How many sticks are there now? Check to see if you are correct.
Ø  Continue with similar examples.
Decrementing by Tens and Ones:
Ø  Display 9 bundles and 6 sticks. How many sticks are there? Place a screen over the 9 bundles and 6 sticks, and remove 2 bundles. How many sticks now?
Ø  Remove 1 bundle and 1 stick. How many sticks now? Check to see if you are correct.
Ø  Remove 2 bundles. How many sticks now? Check to see if you are correct.
Ø  Remove 1 bundle and 3 sticks. How many sticks now? Check to see if you are correct.
Ø  Continue with similar examples.
Students should have been practicing skip counting, and bundles and stick counting throughout the year for success in this unit.
