DESCRIPTION – summary of the module content (100 words)
The Metamaterials CDT mini-project is specified by your PhD supervisors and will provide both an introduction to the general area of research of your PhD and will provide the opportunity for specialised technical training relevant to your PhD project.
The mini-project is a self-contained 6 month piece of research that should ideally lead to research results of significance, suitable for publication in an appropriate academic journal.
MODULE AIMS – intentions of the module
The Metamaterials CDT mini-project is designed to both introduce you to the topic of your PhD via a self-contained time-limited research project and to provide specific training in specialised research techniques that may be used throughout your PhD research.

SYLLABUS PLAN – summary of the structure and academic content of the module
Outline descriptions of the proposed mini-project for each student will be distributed during induction week.
A detailed plan for carrying out the mini-project, and achieving the stated objectives, will be formulated by each student, in consultation with their supervisors, by the end of September.
The research work for the project will be carried out over the period from October to (end of) March.
At the end of March you will be required to submit a report based on the mini-project.
This report must be written in the style of a journal paper (use a journal template where possible), be of no more than 5000 words and ideally, have results, and be of a standard, suitable for publication.
The report will be marked and examined (by viva) by two XM2 staff independent of the project.
In April you will present your 6-month mini-project work in a conference style, 15-min oral presentation, with opportunity for questions.
