Critical Existential-Analytic Psychotherapy and Counselling: A training programme for trainee and qualified psychological therapists
An attempt is made to offer a place where we might still be able to think about how alienated we are through valuing existential notions such as experience and meaning whilst questioning other aspects such as existentialism’s inferred narcissism and the place it has come to take up with regards to such aspects as psychoanalysis and the political. This programme attempts to start with practice. It therefore does not start with theory but rather sees the psychological therapies as cultural practices. Hence, theories will be regarded as having important implications but not applications. Notions of phenomenology come closest to this and hence phenomenology will be explored through humanism, existentialism, psychoanalysis, feminism, postmodernism, critical theory and post-existentialism. Research and particularly qualitative research is also considered as a cultural practice and its relation with ideology and notions of thoughtful practice will also be considered.
Critical psychotherapy (Loewenthal, 2015) is an attempt to preserve a confidential space where society can permit an exploration of that which cannot be spoken of elsewhere. This can include issues of sexuality and violence within therapist and client/patient as well as questions of individual and social responsibility again for both therapist and client/patient.
‘Post-existential’ (Loewenthal, 2011) is taken to mean ‘after’ Heidegger and – in a different way - after Husserl’s phenomenology, yet looking to retain what might be both good from existentialism together with aspects of subsequent developments such as postmodernism. Post-existentialism will be explored in relation to individual and group psychological therapies, clinical supervision, ethical practice and research.
This ongoing series is for trainee and registered psychological therapists and related disciplines. Participants will normally be postgraduates with experience of helping relationships. This programme is also open to Doctoral students (PhD and PsychD) involved with the Research Centre for Therapeutic Education and students working towards UKCP and other professional accreditation who are able to commit to a minimum of one term of the programme. (Continuous Professional Development attendance certificates can be provided) This programme can count towards partial fulfilment of the requirements to be on the UKCP and the UPCA registers as an existential-analytic psychotherapist (see www.safpac.co.uk)
The programme will be conducted as a learning community. Learning methods will include: exploring philosophical texts, ongoing experiential group and clinical and research supervision. The fee per term will be £275.00. Paid annually £750.00 p.a. Students can join the programme at the start of any academic term.
