Background

Providingearly-careersupporttopromisingyoungdevelopingcountryresearchershasbeenthemandateoftheInternationalFoundationforScience(IFS)formanyyears.

Within theIndividualResearchApproach (IFSStrategy2011-2020), IFScontinuesitscommitmenttosupportexcellentindividualresearchandtobuildcapacityofearly-careerscientistsinthedevelopingworldtoundertakeresearchonthesustainablemanagementofbiologicalandwaterresources.Applicantsareencouragedtotackleresearchissueslinkedtotheseareas,andtodevelopsolutionsthatarerelevanttolocalcontexts.Byencouraginglocalresearcherstoworkintheirhomecountries,generatingcutting-edgeandlocallyrelevantknowledge,wehopetocontributetostrengtheningtheircountries’researchcapacityandultimatelycontributingtoaglobalresearchcommunityaimedatreducingpovertyandsupportingsustainabledevelopment.

TheResearchAreas for IndividualResearch

Proposalsaresoughtunderoneofthree researchareas:

  • Biological Resourcesin TerrestrialSystems

Includingbut notlimited to:Biodiversity,Forestry,NaturalProducts, RenewableEnergyandClimateChange.

  • WaterandAquaticResources

Includingbutnotlimitedto:WaterResourcesResearch;Researchonallaspectsof freshwater, brackish andmarineaquaticorganisms and their environments.

  • Food Security,DietaryDiversityandHealthyLivelihoods

Includingbutnotlimitedto:ResearchonFoodProduction;AnimalProductionand VeterinaryMedicine;Crop ScienceincludingUnderutilizedCrops;FoodScienceand Nutrition,andFoodSecurityissues.

Eligibility Criteria

Countryeligibility

Tobeeligible,applicantsmustbecitizensofadevelopingcountrythatiseligibleforIFSsupport,andcarryouttheresearchinaneligiblecountry (thisdoesnot have to bethecountryofcitizenship).

Individualresearchgrantswillbeawardedtoindividualearly-careerscientistsin eligible developingcountriesin supportofexcellentscience.

Researchers applying for afirst IFS research grant must be atthebeginningoftheirresearchcareersandhaveaminimumacademicdegreeofanMSc/MAortheequivalent.Tobeofeligibleage,men must beyoungerthan35yearsandwomen must beyoungerthan40years.Iftheapplicant’s35th(men)/40th(women)birthdayisontheclosingdateofthecall,he/sheis still eligible.

InstitutionalAffiliation

Applicantsmustbeattachedtoanationalresearchinstitute(e.g.university,non-profitmakingresearchcentre,orresearch-orientedNGO)inan eligibledevelopingcountry.Theinstitutionisexpectedto:administerthegrant,guaranteethattheapplicanthasasalary(orothersourceofincome),andprovidebasicresearchfacilities.ResearchersemployedatinternationalresearchinstitutesorNGO’sareNOTeligible. However,researchersdoingpartoftheirprojectataninternationalinstitutecanapplyforanIFSgrant,iftheirprincipal affiliation iswithanational institution.

Funding

IndividualResearchgrantsareawardedonmeritinamountsuptoUSD12,000fora project of 1-3 years.Grantsareintendedforthepurchaseofbasictoolsforresearch:equipment,expendablesuppliesandliterature,aswellasfieldactivities.

ApplicationDeadline

Thedeadlineforsubmissionofresearchgrantapplicationsis31December2017andapplicantswillbeinformedabouttheoutcomeofthecompetitivereviewprocessbefore31July2018.
