History and Report 2011-12

The Asha Chennai scholarship project started in 2000. A lot of the funding came from the Priceton chapter of Asha US for the initial 2 years. Then in 2002 with Asha code AA the project became a Support A Child, where individual donors come forward to sponsor students’ education.

Proposal for 2012-13

This year June 2012-2013 we have started the AK Series Code for the new scholars seeking support.

Rules and guidelines are well publicized on the internet page. This year a large number of students have been able to get the forms and details from the internet, probably because access has improved with penetration of machines through govt. distribution to higher secondary and college students.

A sum of Rs 2 lakhs has been sought for the college students’ English language and computer literacy courses from Asha St. Louis and the chapter has approved the same for this year

Guidelines for the present academic year

All students from Class1 to Class10 will have a maximum limit of Rs8000 for reimbursement
All HSC students will have a maximum of Rs 10,000
All college students will have a maximum of Rs 12,000as grant and upto Rs 15,000 – Amount beyond Rs 12000 being loan
An additional Rs 5,000 for college students may be sanctioned for English language improvement and computer skills required/ suitable for the line of study.
Every effort will be made to help and support rural scholars as per earlier guidelines. However, should there be less eligible scholars from the rural sections the students from the urban section can be chosen within the numbers approved.
In the first instance we can approve a maximum of 100 scholars. If more candidates are identified then the focus group would get a further sanction upto the prescribed limit of 120 scholars from the chapter..
