Fridley Lions Newsletter

September, 2012

It’s been a busy summer and fall for the Lions. We had fun at the Hawaiian themed August business meeting. There were lots of Lions there. One of the things we discussed was the social meetings for the rest of the year. The Board has decided to plan social events for our social meetings – wow! We’ve planned a variety of things to do. The intention is that you bring spouses, friends, potential members, etc., to these events. Many of the social meetings will be held somewhere other than the American Legion, so mark your calendars now. (They are also recorded in the calendar on our website.)

September 25 – Horseshoes

October 23 – Springbrook Nature Center

November 27 - Shortstop

December 25 – no meeting – Merry Christmas

January 22 – Two Stooges – Pool and Darts

February 26 – Governors Night - Shorewood

March 26 – Feed My Starving Children

April 23 – Brown Bag Auction / Mystery Wine Auction

May 28 – Camp Friendship Tour – car pool

June 18 – 49ers Parade Meeting

Many thanks to Lion Greg Ackerman, Lion Ron and Lion Homer for all their hard work on the softball tournament. It was a successful event. Thanks also go out to all the Lions who helped during the weekend!

Thanks also go out to Lion Bud for making sure that we had workers at the State Fair again this year. Several Lions were able to attend the fair, work and eat. It is a great fundraiser for our Admin Fund. Lion Bud has been working hard to get the new directory done. It should be available very soon.

Lions Don Holum and Jeff Hood have done a great job on our literacy project awarding gift certificates to the classroom teachers at Hayes and Stevenson.

Lion Mo reports that Art in the Park is all set for September 9. The Boy Scouts will be helping again this year.

We have two things to do on September 11. First of all, Lion Scott Lund is being honored at an open house to recognize his achievement of the C. C. Ludwig Award by the League of Minnesota Cities. The open house is being held at Springbrook Nature Center from 5:00 to 7:00, with a short program at 6:00. It would be great for as many Lions as possible to attend this event. We also have our regularly scheduled business meeting that night at the American Legion at 7:00 (dinner at 6:30). So, plan to attend Scott’s Open House early so you can get to dinner and our meeting, too.

Fare for All Food Distribution is an on-going service project for our club. If you haven’t been able to help in the past, feel free to just show up at FCC at 9:30 on September 13. Many hands make light work.

Be sure to mark your calendars for our Fridley Lions Family Picnic on September 16 at Manomin Park from 1 to 4. (North of Mississippi on East River Road.) We’ll pass the signup sheet again at the 9/11 meeting. Paper products, condiments, pop, water and beer will be provided. Each family is asked to bring a dish to share.

Lion Bruce is excited to have the first annualfishing launch on September 29 on Mille Lacs. Hopefully many of you were able to make arrangements to go.

September 30 is the date for the Waffle Breakfast. Lion Ken Schultz is getting things organized. Be prepared to sign up to help!

Mark your calendars for the 2nd Annual Zone Challenge at Feed My Starving Children. Those that went last year enjoyed the opportunity. October 30 is the date for the challenge.
