Scientific Method

1. Purpose-The purpose is when you state the question that you want to answer.

2. Research-Is any information that can educate and inform you more about your topic and the question that you are trying to answer. Research can be done on the internet, by reading books that are related to your topic and the question that you are trying to answer. Research can be done be interviewing an expert on your topic. Your research should be recorded so that you can always refer back to it when necessary.

3. Hypothesis-A hypothesis is an educated guess about what type of reaction will occur when you try to answer your question that is found in your purpose. A hypothesis is not a wild guess it is based off of your research and other background knowledge that you may have on your topic/question that you are trying to answer. You make your hypothesis before you conduct your experiment.

4. Experiment-An experiment is a test that is conducted or done to help prove that your hypothesis is correct or incorrect. An experiment may be done several times over and over again to see what the final outcome is. Each time before, during, and after the experiment you are to be recording information that happens with the experiment. This information that you recorded can be used to see what was different and similar about your experiment when you conducted it the first, second, third, fourth…time. When you conduct the experiment you should only be changing one *variableat a time.

5. Analysis-Analysis is the recording of all your findings, reactions, and outcomes that happen before, during, and after your experiment is your analysis. It also includes any *variables that you changed during each time you conducted the experiment.

6. Conclusion-After all experimenting, recording, and researching is finished, you can conclude whether or not you were correct with your hypothesis. Your hypothesis might have been true, false, or has yet to be determined due to insufficient evidence and further experimenting and research will need to continue.

7. Data-Data is information that is collected before, during, and after your experiment. A good synonym for data is the word ______. You will use the data that you collect from your research to help write your hypothesis. You will use the data that you collect from your experiment to help explain what reactions or results you get at the end of your experiment. Finally, you will use the data that you collected from your experiment to write your conclusion.

*Variables-Are directions in your experiment that you might change or alter in your original experiment that may give you a different reaction at the end of your experiment. You only change 1 variable at a time when conducting an experiment.
