Today increasing numbers of students list China among their top areas of geographical interest. Meanwhile faculty list and students want to understand more about China and its society. The Institute of Chinese Studies (ICS) was founded in 2007 by Jan van der Putten (PhD) in order to meet both needs. ICS currently offers academic undergraduate programs.

ICS is a place to acquire a genuine knowledge of Chinese language and culture. It also offers educational field trips in and around Beijing. Studying at ICS offers an enjoyable and interesting experience for the students seeking a 'full China immersion'.

Freelance teacher position 1: Chinese Literature and Philosophy teacher

Job Description:

For the coming ICSacademic semester, the administration has made the position of freelance Chinese Literature and Philosophy teacher available. This teaching job requires giving lessons to our students in Chinese classical and contemporary philosophies and literatures of China. This course is an integral part of the cultural module of the ICS Language and Culture Program.

The aim of this course is to let the student acquire an understanding of the different aspects of Chinese philosophy and literature, using the cultural history of China as background.The scope of the semester is to grasp the fundamentals and principles of Chinese philosophy and history of philosophy, in contemporary China as well as to become familiar with different literature styles both classical and contemporary ones.

Each session will be centered on a specific period in China's history, pointing out and explaining the social and cultural developments of said era. This will be followed by a detailed analysis of the philosophical and literary progress and characteristics of that time. Reading material such as historical articles, translations of Chinese philosophical texts and novel excerpts etc. will be provided to the students.

The ideal teacher will work together with the ICS educational coordinator in order to have the most comprehensive philosophy and literature course available in China.

Topics include:

  • Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism
  • The concept of Tianming (Mandate of Heaven), Yin and Yang Theory
  • Chinese mythology and folklore
  • The Four Classical Novels of China
  • Chinese poetry
  • Authors such as Lu Xun, Mao Dun, Hu Shi etc.

Job requirements:

-Master of Sinology/Chinese Studies with focus on both literature, philosophy or/and intellectual history

-Having deep academic knowing about Chinese Literature and Philosophy

-Teaching experience in this domain

-Excellent English proficiency

-Knowledgeable about pedagogical skills

-Interactive communication with students

-Familiar with Blackboard educational interfaces

The aim of this course is to let the student acquire an understanding of the different aspects of Chinese history, politics, social and economic development of China in the most objective and scientific way.

Modern Chinese History and Politics

Course - objective

Upon completion of the course, students will:

  • Possess a good knowledge of Modern China and its social and political developments
  • Possess an understanding of China’s contemporary politics
  • Be familiar with the major historical events and developments in China after 1842 and in particular after 1911
  • Have understanding of China’s government and party system

Content

In this course, students will study among others the following topics:

  • Chinese Republican Era
  • The Sino-Japanese War, 1931-1945, and its legacy
  • The history of the Chinese Communist Party
  • Analysis of Contemporary China

Social and Economic Development of China

Course - objective

Upon completion of the course, students will:

  • Possess a good knowledge of Modern China and its social and political developments
  • Possess an understanding of China’s contemporary politics
  • Be familiar with the major social and political issues concerning Modern China
  • Have a understanding of China’s party system and its relation with the society

Content

This course focuses on four issues in contemporary China:

  1. The transformation of the socialist state
  2. The politics of resource struggle
  3. The interplay of gender and class in the transitional society
  4. Chinese Diaspora and business networks in the context of globalization.

Each of these issues will be examined with reference to theories of development and histories of China. We will also take a critical approach in our exploration of China's development.

Job requirements:
