Hey, Chaffey Students! Students have many reasons for exploring different careers, and I have decided to write about mine. After reading Dr. Irene Pepperberg’s book, Alex and Me, I began to think about a career as a veterinarian. Pepperberg’s book focuses on her career as a scientist, particularly emphasizing her research on an African Grey parrot, Alex. She considers the connections between the parrot’s speech and animal communication. Sadly, the parrot dies earlier than a typical parrot. As I read the final chapter, I wondered about whether or not the parrot could have been saved with the right medical care. A student at Chaffey College, I would like to find a career where I can help sick and injured animals. As a result, my collage, “The Animals’ Doctor,” focuses on a career in veterinary medicine.
What are the pictures about? Due to my interest in becoming a veterinarian, my collage’simages focus on the qualities necessary for success in this field. For instance, I selected the image of a clock; this is very important. Also, I selected a picture of a sick dog. This cartoon drawing of a basset hound shows a dog with a temperature. He has a thermometer in his mouth and a bag of ice on his head. Also, his dark eyes look sad. He seems to be in need of veterinary care. In the collage, this picture represents one of the most important qualities of a successful veterinarian, the desire to heal sick animals. Although this may seem like an obvious quality, I think it is essential to draw attention to it. Sometimes, students select careers, based on the desires for wealth and parental approval; only students who desire to help animals should pursue careers in veterinary medicine. A less admirable although essential quality is the ability to deny additional care; the picture of a stop sign represents the ability to deny care. Another significant picture is the one of the sad child. Children who are upset about the loss of their pets should be assisted by their parents.
Also, in this paragraph I will talk about how my collage features quotations from resources, addressing preparation for employment in careers, such as veterinary medicine. There is a quote about the cat word, “meow.” Also, my collage features a beautiful picture of a flower in a doctor’s hand. For example, my quotation from the Bureau of Labor statistics focuses on the educational requirements for careers in veterinary medicine. The Bureau of Labor website () explains, “Prospective veterinarians must graduate with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (D.V.M. or V.M.D.) degree from a 4-year program at an accredited college of veterinary medicine.” The extensive level of required education did not surprise me, but this information helped me as I was unaware of the specific degree required.
