*"The Stockton Family of New Jersey and Other Stocktons", Dr. Thomas Coates Stockton, 1911, Appendix, "The Other Stocktons", p 234: "The Pennsylvania and Virginia Stockton; ... It is not certain that all the Stockton included under this general heading are descended from one ancestor; but the records that have come to hand are given for what they may be worth, and the PROBABILITIES are briefly stated in cases of doubt.

(paraphrased) The record of the PA and VA Stocktons begins with Davis Stockton and Robert Stockton, who were b. about the same time, both settled in Lancaster Co., PA and among whose desc. a tradition of relationship survives. ...The "Virginia Magazine of Hist. & Bio.", states that Davis Stockton came from the north of Ireland; and from the fact that the family of Robert Stockton were Presb. and intermarried with a number of Scotch-Irish families, it seems PROBABLE that he also was Scotch-Irish, and that he and Davis Stockton were brothers.

"Robert and Isabel, were in Nottingham Twsp, Chester Co., PA as early as 1732, and his name appears in tax lists there until 1747. This place is at the extreme SW part of Chester co, adjoining the MD line, and was probably considered as being in MD before the Mason Dixon line. They removed in Sadsbury Twsp, Lancaster Co., PA. The relationship of this Robert to the branch of the family which settled in Goochland Co., VA has been much discussed, but never satisfactorily settled....estimate of Robert's birth..."Which strengthens the probability that they were brothers. (he thanks Mrs. Mary L. Painter, of Allegheny, PA for the records of Robert's descendants)

*CCNeilson; Isabella is buried in West Liberty Cemetery, the tombstone inscription reads: "In memory of Isabella Nelson who departed this life October 20th 1816, aged 82 years". therefore she was born approx. 1734. There is no further supporting data for her birth. Isabella married John Neilson about 1754, probably at her father's home in Menallen Twsp, York Co., PA. John Neilson was born about 1731. Between 1755 and 1774, they had at least 9 and possibly 11 children. John and 2 of their sons, fought in the Rev. War (which ones?) Isabella and her husband witnessed her uncle David's 1752 will.

They lived in Menallen, York Co, until at least 1762. (taxed); Letterkenny, Cumberland Co., PA in 1763-1797. (became Franklin Co, 1784); 1797 to WVA vicinity of West Liberty, VA (now WVA) about 8 miles from Wheeling.

Isabella died intestate. Her estate settlement identified her 2 living sons, John and James, a dec'd son, Joseph, and husbands of 5 of her 6 daughters, John Caldwell, William Waddell, John Marling, John Poke and William Huston.
