Dear Parishioners,

Happy Mother’s Day

How wonderful it is to honor our Mothers today. How blessed are the children who have been nurtured and cared for by loving Mothers!

The faith community of Saint Anselm is blessed with the presence of so many good Mothers. Today, I pray with praise and gratitude to God for giving life to the loving spirit in Mothers which, in turn, has given life to so much faith and goodness in their children.

All Masses on Mother’s Day are being offered for all our Mothers, living and deceased.

Josephine C. Connelly Achievement Award

On Monday evening, the Connelly Foundation’s Josephine C. Connelly Achievement Award Ceremony will be held at Archbishop Ryan High School.

David Anderson, Eileen Moroz, and Gabriella Van Allen, 8th Grade students in Saint Anselm School, will be among those who have earned this award.

The Connelly Foundation grants a $2,150 tuition scholarship per year for four years at an Archdiocesan High School (total value $8,600).

The Connelly Family and Foundation are very generous in their support of Catholic Education. Catholic parishes within the City of Philadelphia are blessed to be the recipients of their generosity.

Congratulations Mrs. Murphy

Mrs. Geraldine Murphy, our School Principal, will be inducted into the Little Flower Catholic High School for Girls Hall of Fame on Monday evening (May 12th). Mrs. Murphy is being recognized and honored as a graduate of Little Flower for her outstanding work as a Catholic School teacher and administrator which has had a positive influence on many people.

Archdiocesan Wedding Anniversary Celebration

Married couples celebrating 50 and 25 years of marriage in 2014 are invited to the Archdiocesan celebration on Saturday, May 31st at 5:15 PM in the Cathedral Basilica. No prior registration is required.

Carnival – Saint Anselm Parish

Our Carnival will be held this week. Please spread the word to your neighbors, friends, and family. Besides being an important fundraiser for the parish, it is a wonderful opportunity for the neighborhood community to socialize and interact.

I am most grateful to all who have been working behind the scenes planning and preparing for the carnival.

Sellers Needed – Baseball Mania

Sellers are needed for our Baseball Mania. For every 5 tickets a seller sells, the seller earns a chance to win a $150 sellers prize. For every 250 tickets sold by sellers, there will be a $150 sellers’ prize. For example, when sellers sell 500 tickets, there will be two $150 sellers’ prizes; when sellers sell 750 tickets, there will be three $150 sellers’ prizes. Sellers will be eligible for each prize offered.

Thank You, Ladies of Saint Anselm

The Ladies of Saint Anselm Travel has presented the Parish with a check for $3,500. This money was generated by their fundraising efforts during this academic year. I am most grateful to the Ladies of Saint Anselm for their love, dedication, and hard work which raised needed funds for our School. I am most grateful to everyone who supports the fundraising projects sponsored by the Ladies of Saint Anselm.

Mystagogy

As a Church we continue to celebrate Easter. We do so for 50 days. Throughout this Easter Season we are called to reflect upon our experience of how Jesus has graced us with forgiveness, recovery, Easter and New life. These recollections are meant to reassure us that Jesus, who has been with us in the past, will be with us in the future.

The questions to ask yourself daily during the Easter Season are, “How has Jesus been at work in my life?” “How did Jesus grace my life during Lent with forgiveness, healing, recovery, Easter, and new life?”

May your recollections grace you with a heightened awareness that Jesus is indeed risen, alive and at work in your life. It is no wonder that Christians, aware of the faith, love and goodness that Jesus has brought to life in them, proclaim ALLELUIA over and over again throughout these 50 days.

Charities Appeal – Showing that we care

Everyone is asked to make a generous, charitable, financial contribution to the Archdiocesan Catholic Charities Appeal.

Approximately 250,000 people are served annually in some way by the Appeal. Through the generosity of the people of the Archdiocese – children with special needs or in need of foster homes and adoptive families – the sick and infirm – the homeless and the poor – people in need of counseling and social services are cared for. God bless you,

Honoring Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe

During her apparition to Juan Diego, Mary revealed her motherly concern for all of God’s children. Mary directs Juan Diego to tell the Bishop to build a Church so the Mexican people can have a place to go to get to know God and to experience his love and care in Jesus. The Bishop is skeptical. He wants a sign.

The sign will be seen in roses which bloomed on a cold December day on a rocky hill. Juan wraps the roses inside his tilma (cloak) to protect them from the cold. When he unwraps the roses before the Bishop and lets them fall out, the image of Mary as Juan saw her has been imprinted on the inside of his tilma. The Bishop believes and the Church is built.

Note that the color of Mary’s gown is the rose pink of dawn. This color expresses in her apparition that God’s Spirit would bring about the dawn of a new era for the Mexican people. Many Mexican people came to know God and were converted to Christianity. As a result, harmony and peace were restored and their civilization

flourished with new life.

Finding Meaning for Our Lives

Recall that it was a cold December and a rocky hill in Mexico where the roses grew. Meditation and prayer would prompt us to ask:

Are there areas in our hearts that have grown cold?

Are there areas in our lives that have grown hard because of hurt, prejudice, animosity?

Do you know people who suffer because they have been mistreated by their life situations: sickness, sorrows, stress, problems, difficulties, death of loved ones . . . .?

Who are the people whose faith has grown cold . . . people who have little or no knowledge of God or who perceive God to be what God is not . . . ?

In Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe, we have an intercessor who brings knowledge of God into people’s lives.
