ELECTIVE ART (Cycle 2)

REQUIREMENTS

F.Y.I. QUESTIONS & ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS (Class Participation)

Bell Ringer: FYI questions – Art History (famous artists and their work)

Essential Question: viewed on the TV. Students will be asked to participate

relating the Design Elements to the current stage of their art project.

BONUS WORK (25 points each term) (Optional)

Internet Research of major art museums (links are on Mrs. McDonald’s web page) will give students the opportunity to earn 25 bonus points each term. This work takes an average of 15 minutes.Required: view 5 art works displayed at a major Art Museum; list title, artist & location; and write a short paragraph (minimum of 5 sentences) reflecting on one art piece. Bonus handout is available on link and in folder near the grading folders on my desk. Submit before the end of each term.

SKETCH BOOK - HOMEWORK (100 points) ( MANDATORY!)

5 GOOD QUALITY finished sketches (Art Work) are due on Monday, March30th

(100 points total - 20 points each) Late Sketches will NOT be accepted!

This work should be polished, finished pieces of good quality art work,

which includes shading to create volume. (Black & white or color in any medium)

Artistic ability improves with practice and most art work begins with drawing.

Therefore, sketches are a requirement. Students are encourage to draw often!

Finished work must be attached to your “Sketch Grades” sheet when submitted.

(2) sketches must be framed and are required to be included in the art show.

Students will be issued a sketch book free of charge.

1st assignment will be to design a cover. (50 points)

One ZENTANGLE A DAY (50 points each term) MANDATORY!

Students will begin every class period by spending the first 3-5 minutes of class adding one piece (shape) to their pattern. It is a great way to place your mind in “the zone” to then be able to focus on your current project. Please spend NO longer than 5 minutes, so that you have sufficient time to work on your current major project.

Drawing begins withrepeated designs (doodles) done with black Sharpie marker.

Learn to create interesting composition with shapes by incorporating the use of the Elements & Principles of Design. Colored pencil or marker should be added for color.

One Term of your choice should be a Zentangle that is only black & white.

A finished detailedZENTANGLE (full page) must be submitted at the end of each term.

50 points will be earned with NO deductions based on quality, just completed work,

EXCEPT if work lacks detail or is submitted late! Have fun and be creative!!! Students must submit work & rubric after writing a short paragraph( 5 sentences) reflecting on their work.

REQUIRED MAJOR PROJECTS (100 points each- 50 if less time)

1. Design Sketch Book Cover (50 Points)

2. Pen & Ink Drawing

3. Painting (Acrylic Painting: Art 1 & 2) and (Oil Painting: Art 3 & 4)

4. Clay Leaf Bowls

5. Copper & Aluminum Foil Repousse (maybe 50 points)

6. Decorative Mardi Gras Masks

7. Self-Portrait Drawing in Pencil (using the Grid Method)

8. Paper Mache Vase (save dried flowers or weeds in the fall)

9. Polymer Clay Jewelry

10. Wheel Thrown Pottery (Due April 10, 2015)

11. Watercolor Painting or Gyotaku Fish Prints

* Major demonstrations will be given with step by step instructions

* Deadlines (Dates will be announced)

Work must be signed, framed and displayed BEFORE 1st Period on the due date.

All electives must participate in Group Critiques. MANDATORY!

Late work will result in the loss of 3-10 points. New: (0) after 2 weeks

Rubrics are used for required projects. (Issued & discussed during demonstration)

New: Think about possible subjects to use and write 3 choices on the rubric.

Student Self-Assessment must be completed by each student.

New: Students will write a short critique of their work on the rubric.

All rubrics will be kept in student’s individual grading folder.

Projects will also be displayed in the showcase & included in the Art Show.

SUBJECT MATTER

* Choice (Art is an expression of yourself)

* Exceptions: NO nudes; cigarettes; drugs; alcohol; Satanic subjects;

Blood, death & gore. (this includes NO symbols of the above)

Submitting inappropriate art work will result in a written conduct report, work given to

the principal and a (0) grade for the assignment.

(Only choose school appropriate subject. There are thousands of subjects to draw)

* NO tracing any portion and NO enlarging on opaque projector

* Original ideas are suggested.

* Ideas must be approved before beginning a project.

ART SHOW PARTICIPATION Date: Wednesday, May 6, 2015 (MANDATORY!)

All students must participate in the Art show with an individual display which includes all major projects and 2 sketches. In addition 2 moremay be addedif approved.

* Your display will be graded. (100 points)

If you do NOT participate, you will earn a zero. (may result in failing Term 4)

In case of illness, you must call the school before 8:30am.

LOCAL ART CONTESTS

All Electives must enter a piece of art work in local contests. (March-April)

Scholastic Art Contest (teacher’s choice) & Pa. Governor’s School (see me – Oct.)

DAILY WORK HABITS 22-23 points (entered 8 times)

1. EFFORT: Student must try to the best of his/her ability.

2. ATTITUDE: Student should be positive & pleasant while showing enthusiasm

for each project. (My motto: “Be pleasant or be quiet!”)

3. WORK HABITS: Student must do the following:

a.) use class time wisely to accomplish as much work as possible.

b.) a point will be deducted for every day if you are not working on

your required project during class (unless you are on the wheel)

c.) use materials & equipment properly

d.) cleanup work area & materials by the bell – don’t be late!

4. BEHAVIOR: Student must follow all school rules in “The Griffin”

and all CLASSROOM RULES which follow:

a.) show respect for the teacher, other students & supplies

b.) follow directions

c.) work quietly without disturbing others (low volume)

d.) no talking while the teacher is talking

e.) do not touch anything in the art room (exceptions will be noted)

f.) be on time & be prepared (you do not need to go to your locker)

VIDEOS & ART PRINTS

Students will be viewing a variety of famous artwork from prints and books.

The following videos may be shown in class:

Elective Art students will be issued various art supplies to use during the school year at NO cost to the student. However, ALL supplies must be returned in good condition at the end of the school year. Students will be charged for any materials damaged or not returned. It is your responsibility NOT to lose or waste supplies.

Materials will not be issued until this form is signed by both student & parent.
