Happy Easter!

April Demo - Bell Berger
Genesis Heat Set Oils

I began painting in 1984 shortly after my son was killed in an automobile accident. I thought it would be an inexpensive form of therapy. Boy was I wrong; it was great therapy, but far from cheap. After my firstclass, I was bitten by the painting bug. I studiedacrylics, watercolor, and oils with Sylvia Arb, a prominent teacher in Belle Chasse. Through Sylvia I joined the New Orleans Chapter of Tole and Decorative Painters Society and took classes at the yearly retreats from Klaudia Durnin (oil, acrylics, watercolor & colored pencils), Lois Sunquist (oils), Myriam Harmon (watercolor), & several others.

I began to sign-up for workshops after I retired in 2006. Kathie George (Batik & watercolor), Rodney Ann Bensman (colored pencils), Trudy Beard (acrylics), Kelly Hoerning (colored pencils), Connie Parkinson (acrylics), Ann Kingsland and Mary Gibilisco (Genesis Heat Set Oils) are some of the workshops I have taken.

I really fell in love with Genesis Heat Set Oils, so I began to play around with them at home. Ria Russo was very impressed with my work and pushed me to teach it at the Decorative Painters Annual Retreat. I might add she pushed me out of my comfort zone. The class was a huge success; therefore, I gained confidence in myself. I continue to experiment with these oils and am developing different and various techniques.

President’s Note

Dear Members, Spring has sprung. As I sit here addressing you, I hear the birds chirping outside my window, (I hope the little critters are not building a nest in my gutter spouts!) 'I see trees of green, red roses too, I see 'em bloom for me and for you, and I think to myself, What a Wonderful World.' Oh Yeah, it's spring. And the Clearview Show ushered the season in with loud applause. Thank you, Gerry Claude and thanks to all members who contributed to such a beautiful exhibit.

Don't forget to pick up your directories. We are now using binders, so storage can be a problem. Sorry, we can't mail them to you. We would rather see you anyway, so 'come on down' and collect your directory and share a fun artful evening with us.

Kathy Stone did just that last meeting. Her delightful personality and her creative talent were refreshing and informative as she demoed her 'masking shadows' technique. "You go Girl!"

The Crescent City Brewhouse show is now on the calendar thanks to Jan Wilken. Each guild will treat this as a show and provide entry formsand cards to its members. We will have one judge who will rely on the cards to determine winners foreach guild but an artist can only enter from one guild. Thiswill mean more winners and awards! But each artist MUST attend the reception in order to participate in the show and we are encouraging everyone to bring family and friends. Can you imagine having to go to a fabulous free party with good food, good eats, and good friends just because you entered a great art exhibit with lots of viewers and loads of winners…?

Congratulations to Kathleen D'Anna once again for winning Artist of the Month. Check out her streetcar on JAG's website. It is really a fine piece of work.

Hang in there, Ria Russo
