EXTRACTION OF MINOR MINERALS

Perennial rivers, rivulets and rivers originates from mountains in Uttarakhand and enters various places in plain regions. Because these rivers are due to seasonal rainfall therefore a lot of debris (due to heavy landslide) in form of gravel, sand and stone drains down through mountains.

The debris is used in industries for various industrial use such as the construction industry, glass industry, for road construction, water treatment and for park path. these cause excessive demand of the debris.

Collection and marketing of minor minerals (sand, boulder and Bazari) from the river beds of reserved forest areas has been undertaken (Indian Forest Conservation Act, 1980) in order to protect the forest lands, agricultural crops, inhabitations from the havoc of floods. The collection and marketing system is being converted from volume base to weight basis for the disposal of minor minerals, in the Gaula, Sharda, Nandhaur, Kosi, Dabka, Ganga, Yamuna and Song rivers of the State.

PINE RESIN EXTRACTION

The pine resin is an important non-timber forest produce from Pine forests of Uttarakhand. Viroja and turpentine oil is made from pine resin which is used in production of soaps, paper and paint etc. Pine resin in Uttarakhand is a key means of self-employment and the rural economy and currently employs 173 pine based industries (According to year 2010 – 2011 census) out of which 90 pine resin units are working and remaining 83 are non-working. Lisa extraction was started on experimental basis in 1890 and by the year 1920 it was made aregular practice. "Fanc cup and lip" method has been used for pine resin extraction till 1993
