Environmental Toolkit /
  • How regularly do you use the toolkit to evaluate your environment?

  • You might want to consider having a focus area at staff meetings, rather than evaluating the whole setting at one time.

Literacy Tracker /
  • Are your trackers completed over time to show child’s progress in pre-5 setting?
  • Do you use the information gathered to plan next steps in learning to provide progression, depth and challenge?

Bedtime Stories /
  • Is your lending library called ‘Bedtime Stories’?
  • Can children change their book any day and as often as they wish?
  • Can children change their book at arrival or collection time?
  • Do parents/carers (not staff) change the bedtime story book with their child?
  • Can / do children choose more than one book?
  • Is the book stand located beside the registration area?
  • Is it visible and inviting?
  • When do staff talk to parents and children about their bedtime story experience?

Up, Up and Away /
  • How regularly do you use the resource in your setting?
  • Which aspects of the resource do you use the most?
  • How will you make sure that you are using all of the aspects of the resource? (eg home literacy tool, observational tool, promoting attachment strategies, improving communication strategies, developmental milestones)
  • How do you involve parents and where appropriate children in your use of the resource?
  • What impact has the resource had on children’s progress and development?
  • How will you continue to expand and improve the use of the resource in your setting?

  • Have staff attend CPD sessions / open doors events?
  • Have you accessed the online support documents on Education Scotland Website?
  • What do you see as the characteristics of high quality ELCC in your own particular setting?
  • What changes can you make tomorrow, next week and next month to improve the quality of children’s experiences in your setting?
  • How well does your setting allow children to make choices and provide them with well thought out experiences and opportunities through play to develop their learning? How could this be improved?
